Nortel Networks has started deployment in 4G LTE (Long Term Evolution) technology and will continue to cooperate with Taiwan makers to develop LTE CPE products, according to Jackson Wu, president of Nortel Greater China.
Although LTE technology is still in the early stages, Nortel has already begun talks with Taiwan makers on the possibility of cooperating on 4G CPE development projects, Wu stated.
Shipments of WiMAX products from Nortel's two partners in Taiwan – Zyxel Communications and Quanta Microsystems – are expected to increase substantially in 2008 after Nortel signed a cooperation agreement with the two firms in 2007, Wu noted.
A notebook-use WiMAX module developed by Quanta has already passed interoperability tests conducted by Nortel. The module is likely to become a major mobile WiMAX CPE product, Wu contended.
In addition to stepping up cooperation with WiMAX hardware makers, Nortel is also expected to strengthen its cooperation with MediaTek for the development of WiMAX chips, according to sources at Nortel.
In other news, Wu also forecast that sales of Nortel's business-use network equipment will grow significantly in the Greater China and Asia-Pacific areas in 2008 due to ongoing demand in the region.
Demand for telecoms equipment will be also strong in China, with Nortel to begin shipping its 40G optical transport equipment to China in the first or second quarter, Wu noted.
