Asustek and Gigabyte Communications to switch to Qualcomm 3.5G single-chip solution

Two more Taiwan handset vendors – Asustek Computer and Gigabyte Communications – have decided to adopt Qualcomm's 3.5G handset platform, the MSM7201, for the production of smartphones, according to sources from Taiwan's handset industry.

High Tech Computer (HTC) and LG Electronics are currently the two major clients of Qualcomm's MSM7201 single-chip handset solution, with HTC already demonstrating the benefits of the chipset in its HTC Touch and HTC Touch Diamond lineups, the sources noted.

Asustek and Gigabyte apparently aim to follow the steps of HTC in order to strengthen their competitiveness in the smartphone segment, observed the sources.

Asustek began the production of smartphones with chipset solutions of Marvell Technology and then switched to Ericsson's EMP platform, said the sources, noting that Asustek is expected to launch Qualcomm-based smartphones by the end of this year.

Gigabyte currently uses Qualcomm's MSM6280 handset chips paired with Marvell's handset CPU for its production of 3G/3.5G handsets. The company plans to also start using the MSM7201 single-chip solution by year-end 2008, indicated the sources.
