HTC may launch GSM-version of Touch Diamond in North America before end of year, says paper

High Tech Computer (HTC) may launch a GSM version of HTC Touch Diamond handset in the North American market before the Christmas holiday season now that the GSM Touch Diamond has received a certification from the US FCC (Federal Communications Commission), according to a Chinese-language Commercial Times report.

HTC has said it plans to market only its CDMA version of the Touch Diamond in North America, indicated the paper, which also noted that this policy is to avoid direct competition with 3G iPhones.

HTC recently modified its policy by allowing users of its tri-band (900MHz/1800MHz/1900MHz) Touch Diamond to download necessary software to unlock the 850MHz frequency band support built into the handset. The 850MHz and 1900MHz frequency bands are widely used in North America, the paper noted.
