Over half the world’s 260 million WCDMA/HSPA subscribers connected by Nokia Siemens Networks
Nokia Siemens Networks is the global leader in the deployment of high-speed mobile broadband networks supplying WCDMA/HSPA networks to over 130 paying customers worldwide. The success of the company’s energy efficient 3G WCDMA/HSPA radio access solution means Nokia Siemens Networks now has the largest footprint of any vendor worldwide.
In the first nine months of 2008 Nokia Siemens Networks made more shipments of WCDMA/HSPA than during the whole year 2007, deploying the technology to over 130, paying, radio network customers worldwide. This figure excludes WCDMA/HSPA trials, extension agreements or agreements including only 3G core networks, cited by some as valid WCDMA/HSPA customer references.
Nokia Siemens Networks delivers to 18 of the 25 biggest 3G operators in the world and the company has supplied nearly half of all currently live HSPA networks. Over half the world’s 260 million WCDMA/HSPA subscribers connected by Nokia Siemens Networks.
“Nokia Siemens Networks radio access business is driven by the strong ambition to become the undisputed number one radio access vendor”, said Marc Rouanne, head of the company’s Radio Access business. “Our customers are hungry to provide the most reliable and satisfying 3G user experience, while spending less on the energy required to power their networks, and Nokia Siemens Networks mobile network products do exactly this.”
In addition to its 3G leadership, Nokia Siemens Networks has broken records in 2G, GSM/EDGE, deployments, with more than 200,000 GSM radio transceiver units, enough to enable approximately 70 million calls during Busy Hour (BH), delivered in July 2008 alone. A radio transceiver unit is commonly used as the basic measure for capacity in a BTS.
Much of the company’s GSM and 3G success can be put down to the environmental credentials of its Flexi Base Station; the world’s most energy efficient. Nokia Siemens Networks “green” Flexi Base Station now provides over 200 mobile operators with base station site energy savings of up to 70%, when compared to traditional products. In addition, the Flexi Base Station is designed in a way that reduces its environmental impact over its whole life cycle; over 90% of its materials are suitable for recycling. The company continues to focus on further reducing the energy consumption of its radio network products and by 2011 Nokia Siemens Networks expects to be able to power the majority of base stations deployed at remote locations, without access to grid power, from renewable energy sources, such as solar or wind-power.
Nokia Siemens Networks plays a key role in research activities and in the 3GPP standardization work, which is laying the foundation for the future of wireless communications. Driving a holistic HSPA evolution with Nokia, Nokia Siemens Networks is ensuring that radio evolution is not only about peak data rates but also improving consumers’ service experience in multiple ways, from longer cell phone battery life to shorter voice or data call set-up time. The leadership in standardization work is also a guarantee of the future-proofness of Nokia Siemens Networks’ radio solutions, an example being Flexi Base Station’s SW-upgradeability to HSPA Evolution and LTE. This makes Flexi Base Station the true multiradio base station - capability which is unmatched in the industry. As the leader in 3G with hundreds of supply contracts, Nokia Siemens Networks has the scale and insight to invest in innovation in GSM/EDGE and WCDMA as well as to take pioneering steps to bring the benefits of LTE and WiMAX to operators as well.
