Skype sees WiMAX as business opportunity, says COO

During his visit to Taiwan, Skype COO Scott Durchslag noted that Skype is looking to extend its business operations from PCs to mobile communication devices, with WiMAX being one technology that afford the company potential business opportunities for Skype VoIP services.

Durchslag explained that if you look at the traditional mobile telecommunications market, if providers of VoIP service want to step in and offer services, they will face conflict with existing mobile telecom service carriers. However, WiMAX is a different case, for there will be new applications for potential cooperation after WiMAX operation kicks off, Durchslag pointed out.

In addition to visiting its local Taiwan Skype service operator PChome Online, Durchslag was visiting Taiwan is to seek opportunities of cooperation between Skype and Taiwan-based makers of handsets and mobile devices, according to industry sources.
