Chunghwa Telecom (CHT) is likely to launch the second Android-powered handset from High Tech Company (HTC) in the second quarter of this year, according to market sources.
The new Android-based handsets will form part of the high-end smartphones CHT plans to purchase this year, the sources noted. Total smartphone purchases by CHT in 2009 are expected to top 300,000 units, accounting for slightly more than 15% of CHT's projected procurement volume of 1.8-1.9 million units for the year, said sources at CHT.
CHT purchased a total of 2.1 million handsets in 2008 making the 2009 procurment volume a decrease of around 10%, the sources noted.
In the meantime, CHT's sales of iPhone 3G handsets have met with its expectations recently, and the company's goal to sell up to 50,000 iPhone 3Gs by the end of the first quarter of 2009 remains unchanged, stated CHT sources.
Total capex allocated for CHT's mobile communication unit is expected to stay flat at NT$5 billion (US$148.4 million) in 2009, said company sources, who also noted that CHT will have installed a total of 6,000 3G base stations by the end of March this year.
