Some Taiwan WiMAX licensees looking to switch to LTE technology

Some WiMAX licensees in Taiwan are considering bypassing WiMAX technology and instead switching directly to Long Term Evolution (LTE), according to sources within the WiMAX segment.

However, Taiwan's National Communications Commission (NCC) stated that it will have to consult with other government agencies before allowing WiMAX licensees to migrate to LTE because some licensees have received government subsidies to set up their WiMAX networks.

Tatung InfoComm, Far EasTone Telecommunications (FET) and First International Telecom (Fitel) are the partners for the Taiwan government-backed M-Taiwan (mobile Taiwan) program.

None of the WiMAX licensees have submitted application for switching to LTE service so far, NCC noted.
