Taiwan market: Samsung launches touch-enabled Star S5230 handset

Samsung Electronics launched four handsets, the mid-range touch-enabled Star S5230 as well as the S3600, C3050 and B309, in the Taiwan market on June 30. The company expects the ratio of touch-enabled handsets to increase substantially in 2009, according to Jae Hyun Ryu, director of the mobile communications unit at Samsung Taiwan.

Global sales of the Star S5230 have surpassed one million units per month since the model was introduced in Europe in April,and the company expects total global shipments of to exceed 10 million units by the end of the year, the Chinese-language Economic Daily News (EDN) quoted Ryu as saying.

Samsung shipped 6.1 million touch-enabled handsets in the first quarter of 2009, accounting for a 23.95% share in the segment, according data compiled by market research firm Strategy Analytics.

Meanwhile, Ryu revealed that Samsung plans to launch its first Android-powered handset, the i7500, in the Taiwan market in the third quarter of 2009.
