Sony Ericsson offers cautious view on 2010

Manufacturer reports a loss in line with expectations for Q4 2009.

Sony Ericsson has offered a cautious view on 2010 market conditions, despite reporting a Q4 loss in line with expectations.

The manufacturer reported a quarterly pretax loss of £165m for the quarter ended 31December 2009 today (22 January).

Sony Ericsson shipped 14.6 million phones in Q4, down from 24.2 million in the last quarter of 2008, but up slightly from 14.1 million in Q3 2009.

Total revenues fell 40% year on year to £1.5bn. The company estimates it had around 5% of the world market last year, and predicted ‘slight growth’ in units in 2010.

Sony Ericsson has been hampered by its weakness in the smartphone segment, with software issues plaguing its Satio and Aino handsets last year. Vodafone also dropped the X2, due to be released this year, before it had launched.

However, the manufacturer reported progress in its turnaround plan. In addition to continued cost cutting, Sony Ericsson's new president, Bert Nordberg, is pinning turnaround hopes on success in smartphones, handsets that have advanced mobile internet and networking functions.

‘The refreshed portfolio, coupled with the business transformation programme, has started to positively impact our financial results,’ he said.
