China completes bidding for over one million CPE products for CMMB commercial trial

Related organizations and companies in China have picked up over one million CPE (customer premise equipment) products, including handsets, PNDs, PMP players and USB dongles, through open bidding for second-phase commercial trials of China Mobile Multimedia Broadcasting (CMMB) technology, according to market sources in China.

The products were selected from 400 items offered by over 120 suppliers, the sources said. In addition to domestic companies which include ZTE, Lenova, Aigo and Changhong Electric, South Korea's Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics as well as US-based chipset maker Mavcom, among others, are also listed as qualified suppliers, the sources indicated.

Mavcom, a mobile digital broadcast semiconductor company focusing on wireless and mixed-signal technology, has claimed that it will supply about 80% of IC solutions needed for the production of the CMMB-enabled CPE products.

Delivery of the CPE products will begin to take effect at the end of January 2009, the sources said.

In other news, demand for CMMB-enabled CPE products is expected to top 8.6 million in 2009 before further expanding to 24 million units in 2010, according to estimates of China-based Beijing Nuo Da Consulting (NDC).
