Huawei Joins Board of Directors of Both the WiMAX Forum® and the Open Patent Alliance (OPA)

Huawei Technologies ("Huawei" ), a leader in providing next-generation telecommunications network solutions for operators around the world, announced that it has joined the Board of Directors of the WiMAX Forum, the leading non-profit organization in WiMAX standardization and certification, shortly after having been appointed as a board member of the Open Patent Alliance (OPA), an organization spearheaded by Intel Corporation to provide WiMAX intellectual property rights solutions.

Ron Resnick, President and Chairman of the WiMAX Forum said, "Huawei is a global telecommunications leader, and we are very pleased that Huawei has joined our Board to help promote the WiMAX ecosystem. We look forward to Huawei's further involvement to help accelerate WiMAX deployments worldwide. As a leading advocate of WiMAX technology, Huawei has proven its willingness and ability to deliver standards-based, end-to-end products and solutions to its numerous operator customers. This knowledge will serve the WiMAX Forum Board well."

"Huawei has been developing WiMAX technologies for the past 10 years, and as a board member of the WiMAX Forum and the Open Patent Alliance, we are firmly committed towards driving the development of WiMAX," said Zhao Ming, Huawei' s Vice President of Wireless Product Line and President of WiMAX Product Line. "By facilitating a process that will ultimately offer broader choice and lower total cost of ownership (TCO) for WiMAX technology, we can deliver more high-quality products around the world."

Huawei will assist OPA to focus on aggregating patent rights for the implementation of the WiMAX standard to provide more choices and lower and more predictable costs for vendors and telecom operators. Huawei will also educate the industry about intellectual property rights pertaining to this 4G, IP-based broadband wireless technology.

As one of a handful of manufacturers that are able to provide full end-to-end WiMAX solutions, Huawei has received both 2.5GHz and 3.5GHz Mobile WiMAX™ certification for its base station products from the WiMAX Forum.
