Handset PCB makers post mixed results for 2Q09

Taiwan-based handset PCB makers saw mixed results for the second quarter of 2009, with Unimicron Technology posting a positive EPS of NT$0.96 (US$0.03), and Unitech Printed Circuit Board and Compeq Manufacturing posting a net loss of NT$0.11 and NT$0.18 per share, respectively.

Unitech saw second-quarter revenues increase 23% sequentially to NT$1.97 billion and gross margin grow significantly to 18.63% from 9.69% with operating profits of NT$175 million. However, its subsidiaries experienced losses in that quarter, bringing a total of NT$44.45 million net loss to Unitech.

The company said operations at its Taiwan plants have been improving and drove up second-quarter gross margin. It expects revenues to grow by 15-20% and gross margin to stay flat in the third quarter.

Compeq's performance in the second quarter was also impacted by its China subsidiary's weak results. Compeq has reported operating losses of NT$173 million and net losses of NT$210 million for the second quarter.

The company expects its handset PCB shipments to surpass 100 million units in the second half of 2009 due to seasonal demand, allowing the company to reach its 2009 shipment goal of 170-180 million handset PCBs.

Unimicron swung to profits in the second quarter. Operating profits for the quarter totaled NT$1.13 billion, up more than 10 times sequentially, with net profits reaching NT$1.12 billion.
