Motorola Supplies German Motorways with TETRA Digital Radio System

Contract includes installing TETRA digital radio system and terminals in Thuringia covering 450 kilometres

IDSTEIN, Germany – Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) announced that it has been awarded a contract to supply the motorways in Thuringia, Germany, with TETRA digital radio infrastructure.

Motorola and partner, Telent GmbH, have agreed to install the TETRA infrastructure, as well as supply 200 Motorola MTP850 and MTM800E terminals and a dispatcher system for the Landesamt für Bau und Verkehr (Regional Department for Road Maintenance). The contract, which also includes setting up the TETRA Dimetra IP Compact System at 43 locations over a total of 450 kilometres of motorway is scheduled for completion by 2010.

"We are delighted that the Regional Department for Landesamt für Bau und Verkehr in Thuringia has decided on Motorola's TETRA digital radio solutions," explained Alexander Burghardt, MSSI vice president Central Europe, Enterprise Mobility Solutions, Motorola GmbH. "Following Saxony, Thuringia is now the second German federal state that is converting to digital mobile radio based on the TETRA standard, and consequently, taking the optimum decision to meet the demands on reliable and secure speech and data communication in the future as well."

The start of the installation work is planned for the end of the third quarter in 2009. The Motorola Dimetra IPTETRA System provides the Free State of Thuringia with a high-performance, secure and independent solution for reliable communication between headquarters and task forces operating on the motorway. Among other things, this enables failsafe communication and demand-oriented control of motorway service operations such as accident site clearance, gritting and snow clearance.

Secure speech and data communication is guaranteed by Motorola’s MTM800E TETRA vehicle radio unit and MTP850 TETRA hand-held radio. The MTM800E can easily be fitted to all types of vehicles and motorbikes and the MTP850 is a high performance radio that is compact and light. Outstanding features of the two digital radio solutions include their rugged design and mobile phone-like user interface. In addition, they offer extensive safety functions and guarantee secure and reliable speed and data communication even under the most difficult operating conditions. The GPS receiver for automatic position indication integrated into the units ensures optimum operation planning and increases the safety of the task forces in the event of an emergency.

The Motorola TETRA portfolio includes infrastructure solutions, terminals, applications and services which are now used in more than 90 countries worldwide. Motorola can look back on a wide range of innovations in the mobile radio segment, the foundation stone for which was laid in 1938 with the introduction of the Police Cruiser radio receiver. To date, the company has been able to maintain its leading position in the sector of TETRA digital radio solutions. The rugged, intuitively operated products from Motorola already undergo extensive tests during the development phase in order to ensure high quality and reliable handling even under extreme conditions.
