Honor Given During the International Association of Chiefs of Police Conference.
BASKING RIDGE, NJ — Verizon Wireless, a corporate leader in domestic violence prevention, presented Denver Police Chief Gerald Whitman with the HopeLine® Law Enforcement Partnership Award. The award, given during a ceremony held yesterday as part of the International Association of Chiefs of Police Conference, honors work by public safety individuals and organizations to prevent domestic violence, educate communities and help survivors rebuild their lives.
Mark Harris, vice president of national government sales and operations at Verizon Wireless, presented the award to Chief Whitman, along with a $5,000 grant in recognition of his contributions to SafeHouse Denver, the only shelter in the City and County of Denver that exclusively serves victims of domestic violence.
Chief Whitman is the 10th law enforcement official to receive the prestigious HopeLine Law Enforcement Partnership Award. Previous recipients include the Glendale, Calif., Police Department; the Georgia and South Florida chapters of the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE); Worcester, Mass., Police Chief Gary Gemme; and Broward County, Fla., Sheriff Al Lamberti. For more than a decade, Verizon Wireless has worked with law enforcement and government agencies to support domestic violence prevention and awareness efforts in communities nationwide. Verizon Wireless’ support includes:
•Donating wireless phones and service, high-speed wireless Mobile Broadband service, and cash grants to prosecutors, detectives and other personnel in local government domestic violence units
•Sponsoring phone collection drives in cooperation with local sheriff and police departments
•Partnering with several states’ Attorneys General offices to create campaigns around elder abuse, teen dating and other domestic violence issues
HopeLine collects wireless phones and accessories from any wireless service provider, then refurbishes the phones or recycles them in an environmentally sound way under a zero landfill policy. Proceeds from the HopeLine program benefit victims of domestic violence and non-profit advocacy agencies, providing essential communication tools of wireless phones and services and financial grants.
