Advanced Wireless Semiconductor Company (AWSC) and Win Semiconductors have reported sequential revenue growths of 47% and 37%, respectively, for the third quarter of 2009. Industry sources have estimated both GaAs foundries are likely to enjoy on-month revenue increases through November and December, thanks to growing power amplifier (PA) demand for smartphones.
AWSC's September revenues were NT$120 million (US$3.7 million), an increase of 21.2% from August, with third-quarter revenues totaling NT$263 million. Win Semiconductors saw a significant growth in revenues of 92% in September, generating revenues of NT$1.51 billion for the third quarter.
Although overseas GaAs IDMs have seen healthier supply chains after experiencing losses for several years, they still have no plans to expand capacity and continues to release outsourcing orders to the two Taiwan-based GaAs foundries due to cost concerns, the sources indicated. AWSC is expected to challenge its highest monthly levels recorded in 2008 during November or December, while Win Semiconductor is likely to see a 20% sequential increase in its fourth-quarter revenues, the sources noted.
However, the supply of GaAs wafers has fallen short of demand. AWSC manufactures 1,400 wafers per week at its 4-inch fab, and has added a 6-inch fab with production tape-out slated for the beginning of second-quarter 2010 at the earliest, the sources added.
