A Leader in Environmental Sustainability, Sprint is the Only Wireless Company to Provide Internet Connectivity for the Three-Week Event in Washington D.C.
OVERLAND PARK, Kan.-- Sprint (NYSE:S), ranked #15 on Newsweek’s Green Ranking of America’s 500 largest corporations, the highest among U.S. wireless companies, is partnering with the U.S. Department of Energy and its National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) to support the 2009 Solar Decathlon, a three-week competition starting Oct. 8, in Washington D.C. Sprint will provide a comprehensive suite of Internet based solutions supporting the needs of the Solar Decathlon using a broadband connection for access for all users at this event including competitors, volunteers and the public visiting the venue. To further support the Solar Decathlon, local Sprint employees will volunteer at this event. Sprint also supported this event in 2005 and 2007.

Sponsored by the Department of Energy, the competition offers 20 teams of college and university students across the nation the opportunity to design, build, and operate the most attractive, effective, and energy-efficient solar-powered house. Use of Hydrogen Fuel Cells: Sprint was recently awarded $7.3 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to expand its use of hydrogen fuel cells as back-up power to cell sites on their network. Today, Sprint has more than 250 hydrogen fuel cells deployed at cell sites across its network.
Wireless Recycling: Sprint’s industry-leading wireless reuse and recycling program were created to prevent thousands of tons of wireless equipment from entering the waste stream. Since 2001, Sprint has collected more than 18 million phones for recycling and reuse in an effort to help conserve resources, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and prevent air and water pollution. Sprint’s goal, an industry first, is to achieve a 90 percent recycling collection rate. This ambitious objective, set for 2017, translates to Sprint collecting nine phones for reuse and recycling for every 10 phones that we sell.
Eco Friendly Products and Services: Sprint recently announced the availability of Samsung Reclaim™, the first phone in the nation partly constructed from bio-plastic materials extracted from corn.
