MediaTek adopts EDoF image sensors for handset solutions to tap 3G market in China

MediaTek has begun to adopt extended depth of field (EDoF)-enabled image sensors for its 3G handset IC solutions since the first half of 2009 to reinforce its competitiveness in China's 3G handset market, according to industry sources. Worldwide first-tier handset vendors are expected to begin replacing auto-focus (AF) image sensors with EDoF image sensors in cameraphones with 3-megapixel or higher resolutions in 2010.

EDoF image sensors are expected to become more popular in the global handset market in 2010 because their prices are about US$3 lower than AF image sensors, but their performance is similar, the sources indicated.

EDoF image sensors will be the first choice for cameraphones with 3-megapixel or higher resolutions in the future, and 8-megapixel cameraphones will become the mainstream in 2-3 years, the sources predicted.
