Sprint Recognizes New York City-Area Organizations, Community Champions at Nov. 12 Celebration; Media Invited

YMCA of Greater New York, Tuesday’s Children and local residents Yonette Fleming and Stephanie Natelli to be recognized.

NEW YORK-- Sprint (NYSE: S) announced the recipients of its 2009 New York City community-giving programs. The Sprint Local Grant Program will award two $25,000 Sprint Foundation grants to NYC-area programs that support Sprint’s focus area of youth development. In addition, the Sprint Community Champions Program will honor two outstanding NYC-area residents who have made a positive impact on the community with Sprint Foundation grants to qualified non-profit organizations of the honorees’ choice. The recipients will be recognized and honored at an upcoming grant recognition event hosted by Ralph Reid, Sprint’s vice president of Corporate Social Responsibility.

RECIPIENTS AND HONOREES:

YMCA of Greater New York was selected as a 2009 Sprint Local Grant Program recipient and will receive a $25,000 Sprint Foundation grant for its Y After School program. Y After School provides parents in low-income neighborhoods with a safe place for their children after school gets outs. The curriculum focuses on literacy and project-based learning in a variety of subjects.
Tuesday’s Children was selected as a 2009 Sprint Local Grant Program recipient and will receive a $25,000 Sprint Foundation Grant for its mentoring program. Tuesday’s Children is a family-service organization that makes a long-term commitment to serve every individual who was directly impacted by the events of Sept. 11, 2001. The mentoring program is designed to establish mutually beneficial relationships between adult role models and children age six to 16.
New York resident Yonette Fleming was selected as the 2009 Sprint Community Champion adult honoree, and the Sprint Foundation will be awarding a $5,000 grant to her selected charitable organization, Bailey’s Café. Fleming has worked diligently with the Hattie Carthan Community Garden to open the garden for workshops and create a youth program, teaching grade-school children about gardening and life sciences. The program includes a youth garden, tended by teen volunteers.
New York resident Stephanie Natelli was selected as the 2009 Sprint Youth Community Champion honoree, and the Sprint Foundation will be awarding a $2,500 grant to Natelli’s selected charitable organization, Preston Center of Compassion. Natelli is a student at Preston High School and an active member of the school’s Compassion Connection Club, which focuses on outreach to those in the local community who need it most. She is also a member of Preston’s Big Sister/Little Sister Club, where she serves as a mentor to an elementary-school student.
