J'son & Partners Consulting: Russia market UMTS-phones-up to the 3 quarter. 2009

Company J'son & Partners Consulting presented the main results of regular research Russia market UMTS-phones. This study, as the company claims, is one of the components of monitoring Russia's mobile phone market, conducted its c 2005.

The company estimates that by end 2009 cash park mobile phones with support for UMTS-networks, can exceed the 13 million mark in the terminals.

According to J'son & Partners Consulting, «Slow sales of 3G-phones in 2009 due to the following factors:

• Reduced purchasing power of the population: in a crisis has increased the demand for inexpensive mobile phones. If in 2008 the average retail price of a mobile phone was at 200 dollars, with the onset of the crisis, this figure fell to 150 - 160 dollars. Also there was a decline in effective demand.
• weakening the market position of the company SonyEricsson: on the phone with support for third-generation networks accounted for about half of all sales. By the end of 3 quarters significantly weaken the position of the producer in the whole market, which affected the segment of 3G-phones.
In monetary terms, sales of 3G-terminals in the 3 rd quarter of 2009, according to studies J'son & Partners Consulting, exceeded 414 million dollars.

This figure is 33% below the results of 3 quarters of 2008, which is attributable to lower sales of UMTS-phones in kind, as well as reduction in the average retail cost of the considered terminal by 12%.

Average cost of 3G-phone up to 3 quarters of 2009 amounted to 407 dollars.

Sales UMTS-terminals for the period amounted to about 13% of Russia's mobile phone market in volume terms, while sales of these devices have formed about 33% of the market in monetary terms.

This pattern of sales due to the fact that UMTS-terminals have a higher average cost than conventional GSM-phones:

Following the 3 rd quarter 2009 the company Nokia, Samsung Electronics and SonyEricsson have sold Russia's cellular users to the largest number of 3G-phones.

According to J'son & Partners Consulting, sales of UMTS-phones, made by companies Nokia, Samsung Electronics and SonyEricsson, in 3 quarter of 2009 amounted to 96% of the total market 3G-terminals.

It is worth noting that in this period, Nokia and Samsung Electronics were able to improve their market position, while the share of the company declined SonyEricsson.

The most popular UMTS-phone in 3 quarter of 2009 was the Samsung SGH-I900.

Most inexpensive mass UMTS-phone in the period under review was the Nokia 3120 Classic, its average retail price in 3 quarter of 2009 amounted to 166 dollars.

According to J'son & Partners Consulting, in 4 quarter of 2009, Russia's market of 3G-terminals show positive dynamics.

This will contribute to the following factors:

• Seasonal increase in sales of mobile phones in the 4 th quarter of 2009.
• Increased range of 3G-phones: at the end of 3 quarters of sales represented more than 200 models of phones at the end of 2008 this figure was about 170 models.
According to J'son & Partners Consulting, the share of UMTS-phones in the total sales amount to 15%, and in-kind - about 4,3 million terminals.
