Motorola orders to push Arima Communications handset shipments to 20-25 million units in 2010, say sources

Taiwan-based ODM handset maker Arima Communications may see its handset shipments expand to 20-25 million units in 2010 compared to 12 million units in 2009, thanks to new orders from Motorola, according to industry sources.

Motorola's orders released to Arima in 2010 may top 10 million units with the models targeting the entry-level segment. All of the handsets will be built using chipset solutions from Taiwan-based MediaTek, the sources noted.

Other sources at the Taiwan IC-design industry also indicated that MediaTek actually landed the chipset orders from Motorola at the end of 2009, and the orders included solutions for three 2.5G/2.75G feature phones and one 2.75G smartphone. Both MediaTek and Arima declined to comment on the reports.

Arima's total handset shipments in 2010 are expected to surpass those shipped by rival company, Compal Communications, making Arima the largest ODM handset maker in Taiwan, the sources noted.

Compal is expected to ship 15-20 million handsets in 2010 compared to 17.2-17.5 million units estimated for 2009, said the sources, noting that Compal has shifted its focus on smartphones and shipments of smartphones will reach 3-5 million units in 2010 and account for 50-60% of its total revenues.
