People will buy them anyhow
LG'S EXPLODING laptop is no big deal, Korean analysts reckon.
Why not? Because there is such demand for laptop batteries that production won't be halted - even that of the explosive kind.
The exploding battery was made by LG firm, LG Chemical. And although LG shares slipped a bit following the incident, exploding batteries are small beer these days it seems.
Hyundai Securities analyst Daeyong Park told investors shortly after the event: "Given the tight supply of cylinder-type batteries for notebook computers, the incident is not likely to lead to a suspension of production and a recall that would result in large-scale losses," according to a story on Vnunet.
LG Electronics, won't be that bothered either since it doesn't make that many laptops analysts said.
LG has doubled its battery output over the past two years, to now ship some 20 to 30 million rechargeable cells per month. This growth is largely at the expense of Japanese battery makers, apparently. Spookily enough, almiost two years ago, this hit the world-wide web.
So, to recap: LG Chemical may be one of the world's five largest rechargeable battery manufacturers, but it won't be bothered because there's such a big demand for batteries.
And LG Electronics isn't one of the world biggest makers of notebooks so it won't be that bothered by the incident either.
