Thanko’s APOLLO2 is a Tiny Camera that Packs a 30x Optical Zoom

Thankos APOLLO2 is a Tiny Camera that Packs a 30x Optical Zoom apollo2 7
We’ve seen some interesting gimmicky cameras come out of Japan in the past — from Japanese anime special editions to a donut camera — but this latest one might come in handy a bit more often. Dubbed the APOLLO2 and created by the company Thanko, it’s a compact camera strapped to a whopping 30x telephoto lens.
A cross between interesting and potentially creepy, the camera looks pretty funny with that massive lens hanging off the front — a better model name might have been Pinocchio. But given that it’s meant for one thing and one thing only, you can excuse the appearance.
Thankos APOLLO2 is a Tiny Camera that Packs a 30x Optical Zoom apollo2 5
Thankos APOLLO2 is a Tiny Camera that Packs a 30x Optical Zoom apollo2 2
Inside it packs a 12-megapixel sensor (no word on size) that can also record video, which maxes out at 480p. Since the widest you can go on the attached f/3.0 lens is 10x, both the lens and the camera come equipped with tripod holes for stability’s sake. The good folks at Thanko even include a small tripod in the box.
As you’ve probably already surmised, it’s a gimmick like the ones we mentioned above, but just like those it will probably still find a market to sell to. With 30x optical and an additional 8x digital to work with, however, we just hope that market’s not too creepy.

Currently, there’s no word on any kind of US release, but as the Phoblographer points out, Thanko products often make their way onto eBay — in other words: if you want one, you can find a way. MSRP of the camera in Japan is set at ¥19,800, or about $200 U.S.

Samsung to Jump up Its Application Processor Competitiveness

Samsung to Jump up Its Application Processor Competitiveness

Samsung Electronics is going to apply its own architecture platform to Exynos, a next generation application processor (AP).

It will be the first time for the company to develop Exynos based on its own architecture platform by redesigning the ARM cores. While most of the chip makers are using the ARM cores, there are only a small number of them including Apple and Qualcomm that have developed their own platforms after signing an architecture license with ARM. Therefore, Samsung is expected to drastically jump up its AP competitiveness.

According to the relevant industry on July 28, Samsung Electronics is developing a next generation Exynos that will be equipped with a redesigned ARM core platform led by Samsung Austin R&D Center (SARC). The development is expected to be completed early next year and applied to the company’s flagship Smartphone model.

The platform under development focuses on maximizing the bus performance between the CPU and memories such as DRAM and NAND flash, ensuring that its data-handling capacity and power efficiency are a lot better than the existing ARM cores.

The AP to which Samsung’s architecture platform will be applied is very likely to be a follow-up model of the recently-released processor, ‘Exynos 5 Octa Core’.

It is known that Samsung signed an architecture license with ARM two to three years ago in order to develop its own AP platform. Not only 32bit-based ARMv7 such as Cortex-A15 and Cortex-A19 but also 64bit ARMv8 architecture is included in the contract. The license on the 64bit core is believed to be used for the development of server CPUs.

It is not certain if Samsung would apply big.LITTLE to Exynos as it has had a hard time in addressing heat and design errors after it adopted the technology for its GALAXY S4.

big.LITTLE is a new technology into which Cortex-A7 that boasts low power consumption and Cortex-A15 that handles speedy processing are combined. For calling and texting, A7 is used and for videos, games and other fast processing operations, A15 is switched on.

“It is very positive for Samsung to improve itself from an initial stage of merely utilizing the ARM cores to the point where it deals with the architecture. A new architecture platform that would be equal to the one made by Qualcomm is expected,” says a source from the semiconductor industry.

Samsung’s next processor to have customized ARM-based architecture

According to the Korean publication ET News, Samsung is in the process of designing their own processor, which will use a customized version of the standard ARM architecture, similar to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processors.

You’re probably thinking, “but Samsung already makes its own processors,” and you’re not wrong. Here’s the thing. All the ARM-based processors use the ARM architecture provided by ARM (a British company), but companies like Apple and Qualcomm obtain an “architecture license” and take the default ARM design and tweak it to create versions of their own (users of dedicated GPUs on PCs can relate this to how companies like ASUS and XFX make custom versions of NVIDIA’s GeForce cards, increasing clock speeds, component arrangement, and the like).

This has advantages, such as being able to get higher performance, better power efficiency, and basically improve on the reference design. As a company that has been making processors that have constantly beaten other processors in performance, Samsung is no doubt looking to take it one step further by going with a customized ARM architecture, as powerful competition like Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 800 and (to some extent) the NVIDIA Tegra 4 emerges in the coming months.

We’ll be waiting with bated breath to see what Samsung is able to do, though we’ll have to wait till the first/second half of 2014 to see products using the new processor (the Galaxy S5 will likely use it), according to an anonymous employee quoted by ET News.

Samsung Seeks Growth From Component Business

South Korean Company Says Pace of Smartphone Growth May Slow in Third Quarter

Samsung Electronics Co.'s estimated spending of nearly $12 billion to upgrade and invest in its chip facilities this year underscores the South Korean company's reliance on its component business to drive earnings at a time when smartphone profits appear to be hitting a plateau.

While the South Korean company reported a 50% increase in second quarter net profit Friday to a record 7.77 trillion won ($7 billion), margins from its smartphone business—its biggest profit generator for the past year—were squeezed due to hefty marketing expenses tied to its flagship Galaxy S4 smartphone.

"The smartphone market will likely continue to grow ...

Smartphone growth to slow down in Q3 due to intensified competition, says Samsung

Despite seeing sales of smartphones at an all time high of 72 million units, Samsung believes that the company’s smartphone growth will slow down in the third quarter, owing to increased competition and the addition of more low to mid-range models to the portfolio.

The latter will also be responsible for a lower average selling price for the smartphones Samsung sells in the current quarter, something it has warned investors against, though margins are down even at the high-end thanks to the increased spend on marketing the Galaxy S4.

“The smartphone market will likely continue to grow in the third quarter, but there’s a chance that the pace of growth may slow as competition intensifies with new model releases.”

-Kim Hyun-joon, vice president, Samsung Mobile

The competition Hyun-joon mentions is going to be the hardest in the phablet category, as Sony is bringing the Xperia Z Ultra to compete with Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Note III, so even if the latter is expected to be sold in the millions, it isn’t going to be as easy as it has been in the past. Even HTC is supposedly working on a phablet (the HTC One Max), and the HTC One has already given a slow yet noticeable fight to the Galaxy S4, so it is surely going to be a tough ride leading into the end of this extremely eventful year.

Of course, the fact that overall smartphone growth is also expected to slow down isn’t going to help the case for Samsung, so let’s just keep hoping the company continues to improve on what they’ve already put on the market, and makes their “next big thing” a force to reckon with.

Our 5 favourite new Windows Phone apps of the week

It’s almost the end of July! The kids are on their summer holidays and you’re spending every free moment trying to entertain and/or wrangle them into some sort of joyful family fun-time—so when are you supposed to research the hottest new apps in the Windows Store, eh? Don’t worry: we’ve got that covered! Each week we let you know about our favourite new releases and app updates, so that you’re never left behind. And, wait—what’s this, down below? Only this week’s top five apps, ready and waiting!
App title: HD Photo Viewer
What is it? A new way of browsing through your phone’s photo albums in full HD.
Why we love it? Obviously there’s nothing wrong with the native Windows Picture Hub, but there’s no harm in exploring alternatives. The big plus with this app is that it doesn’t reduce image resolution to speed things up; it retains the original shiny HD resolution that makes your smartphone’s camera so desirable. It also lets you do some editing and file-sharing, which is handy. The only note of caution we’d sound is that 512MB phones might struggle to cope—it’ll work on them, but there might be speed issues and the occasional crash.
Who it’s perfect for: photographers
HDPhotoViewer.
App title: wpTorrent
What is it? A brand-new torrent app for downloading files to your phone
Why we love it? It’s the first native Torrent client for Windows phones. Browse, view, share and use downloaded files, just like you’d do on your laptop or desktop. About time, too, we say, given the audio and video capabilities of most smartphones. Like most torrent services,  wpTorrent is a little tricky to set up and get used to if you’re new to that way of downloading media, but there’s a wealth of info online to explain it all, and it’s worth the effort. A slightly more linited version is available as a free trial.
Who it’s perfect for: Shareaholics
wpTorrent
App title: Wead
What is it? An app to add weather info to your photos
Why we love it? It’s slightly gimmicky, and other apps perform similar functions, but we like the easy, cheesy fun that we get from Wead. Open a photo from the Picture Hub and select Wead as an editing tool; pick a font colour, then type in your location and hit + to add weather; the app uses your location to pull up the current weather conditions and temperature where you are and adds this info to the photo. Very nifty for making your friends jealous of your holiday in the sun…
Who it’s perfect for: travellers
wead
App title: Papirus
What is it? A collaboration service, or organising tool, for business teams
Why we love it?  It lets you create tasks, lists, upload files and more—basically, you can cut out the tedium of fifty emails a day when you’re trying to coordinate a busy team of office professionals. It’s been a cloud-based service for a while, so the WP client is the logical next step. We found it impressively robust and comprehensive for a mobile app; serious thought has gone into this. While it’s probably a little OTT for a general user who just wants a simple to-do list, it’s fantastic for more complex team-work situations. And if your business has fewer than 25 team-members, the free version will suit you down to the ground.
Who it’s perfect for: wannabe business tycoons
Papirus
 App title: Swipe Tunes
What is it? A new, intuitive gesture-based way of navigating your stored music.
Why we love it? Brand new to the market, this is hands-down our favourite app of the week. Swiping and tapping anywhere on the screen gets you from track to track and all the rest (full info in the Help menu!) – no messing about looking for the menu button. It automatically imports all your stored tunes and makes full use of your smartphone’s sensitive touchscreen. Simple as that. You can also customise the app’s theme and Live Tile appearance to your heart’s content.
Who it’s perfect for: music fans
SwipetunesWith photography, weather, music and life tools, we think we’ve got something for pretty much everyone. If you think otherwise, we’d love to hear what we’ve missed in the comments below

Nokia Accessories app: easier, more personal connectivity

When you connect an accessory to your Nokia Lumia smartphone, you’d be forgiven in thinking that’s the end of the accessory experience. In fact, with Nokia’s Accessories app, it’s just the beginning.
The Nokia Accessories app enables you to interact with your Nokia accessories in an easier, more personal way, as Nokia’s Mikko Lönnfors, Lead Program Manager for Nokia Lumia accessories explains:
“We want people to do more with their Nokia accessories. We’ve created a way that you can see the battery level of your accessory right from your Start screen.”
For example, when you pair a Bluetooth headset – such as the Nokia Purity Pro Wireless Stereo Headset by Monster – with your Lumia, the Nokia Accessories app delivers the battery status of the headset to your Start screen as a Live tile.
“In addition to the battery level indicator, this app also makes it possible to rename the attached Bluetooth accessory.”
Nokia-Accessories_Live-tiles Nokia-Accessories_settings
This could be useful if you’ve got more than one of the same accessory in the house and you don’t want to confuse yours with other housemates. Or, if you just like to personalise your Nokia Gear.
Sanda Berar, Head of Connected Gadgets at Nokia also points out another useful feature of the Nokia Accessories app:
“There are some accessories that can be re-programmed to a certain degree. The Nokia Reaction (BH-907), for example, has two physical keys that can be configured from the Accessories app.”
Mikko continues:
“Rather than just having the answer call key to connect or disconnect a call, you can program it to dial a specific number.”
While this may not be useful for everybody, it could be practical if you have a headset in the car that you use when only driving for work where you only call the office while on the road.
Using the app is really simple; just tap your Nokia Lumia Windows Phone 8 smartphone against an NFC-enabled accessory to pair it. Then, within the app, if the accessory is supported, you’ll see it listed for you to interact with.
Another noteworthy feature of Nokia Accessories app is that you can have it launch certain apps every time you connect your phone to a specific Nokia accessory.
CR-200-with-Car-App
A perfect example of this is the Nokia Wireless Charging Car Holder(CR-200).
When you get in your car and place your Nokia Lumia into the car holder, you can use NFC to launch Car App – an app that’s only available with the CR-200.
Car-App
Car App displays large on-screen buttons that are optimised for driving conditions. It’s also a launchpad if you want to start using HERE Drive,Nokia Music or make phone calls using the Quick Call button, as well as any other app that you may want to use.
There’s also a handy carousel that scrolls across the top that displays the time, up-to-date weather forecast and a battery status indicator.
However, if you prefer, you can reprogram the app so that it instantly launches HERE Drive. The crux is that it’s customisable to meet your needs.
Nokia Accessories app supports:
  • JBL PowerUp Wireless Charging Speaker for Nokia (MD-100w)
  • JBL PlayUp Portable Wireless Speaker for Nokia (MD-51w)
  • Nokia Purity Pro Wireless Stereo Headset by Monster (BH-940)
  • Nokia Reaction (BH-907)
  • Nokia Wireless Charging Car Holder (CR-200)
  • Nokia Wireless Charging Stand (DT-910)
Mikko and the team express that they’d like to get as much feedback for this app as possible, to help make future versions.
If you have any questions or suggestions for the Nokia Accessories app, please use the comments box below as the team will be taking notes.

6 ways to add more inspiration in your day

Maybe the mornings are uninspired and the coffee isn’t triggering the brainwaves. Perhaps the music on the radio got a little stale and the news is depressing…
Maybe you’re a designer, a hipster, a teacher, a mom or an engineer just looking for a fresh start and ideas to do your job better. Fortunately, there are lots of ways to add inspiration to your life either online or offline.
Norwegian browser company Opera Software, whose mobile and desktop browsers are made to discover and explore inspiration online, provides several ideas and tips to add inspiration to your life.
Car Sunset Image
1. Visualize:
Find inspirational images (a skydiver in coastal Spain, a quaint town in Italy, a rice farmer in Vietnam) on the web and create a cool, inspirational image gallery on your blog. A simple search for “inspiration” on image-sharing sites such as Flickr or Instagram should do the trick.
2. Watch:
Need a more visual inspiration for your many pursuits? Pull up YouTube and watch amazing videos (such as Steve Job’s famous Stanford commencement speech, or one of the TED talks) to start your day off with wise words! Who knows you might be on to the next big thing.
3. Listen:
Nothing gets the brain cells going than listening to some soothing, inspirational music. Search for an “inspiration” playlist on Spotify – whether its soothing or upbeat music that gets you motivated. Or even better, download karaoke apps like Smule Sing! and sing with people around the world for even more fun. Our suggestion: “Don’t Stop Believing” by Journey.
4. Think:
Make a list of all the goals you have accomplished in the past year and what you’d like to achieve in the coming year. Put both lists as your screen saver or on your fridge door so you are constantly reminded of them.
5. Discover:
Go to your favorite Opera web browser, whether it’s on your smartphone or laptop, and browse the Discover section for interesting and inspirational stories. Select the “arts” or “food” category through the settings button and discover tantalizing content that will be a feast for both your eyes and your hunger.
6. Get out:
The best inspiration you can find is in nature. Find an amazing outdoors spot. Discover nature and appreciate the beauty. Document the sunsets and hikes through photos and share them on social networks.
“Inspiration is everything,” says Lars Boilesen, CEO, Opera Software. “I start every day finding inspirational thoughts, stories, ideas, images on the web with my Opera browser, whether it’s on my phone or my laptop. The web and the world are a treasure trove of inspirational ideas and you can start off right there.”
Download the Opera browser and discover all that the web has to offer!

Sony and Panasonic sign basic agreement to jointly develop standard for professional-use next-generation optical discs

Sony Corporation (‘Sony’) and Panasonic Corporation (‘Panasonic’) announced that they have signed a basic agreement with the objective of jointly developing a next-generation standard for professional-use optical discs, with the objective of expanding their archive business for long-term digital data storage. Both companies aim to improve their development efficiency based on the technologies held by each respective company, and will target the development of an optical disc with recording capacity of at least 300GB by the end of 2015. Going forward, Sony and Panasonic will continue to hold discussions regarding the specifications and other items relating to the development of this new standard.

Optical discs have excellent properties to protect them against the environment, such as dust-resistance and water-resistance, and can also withstand changes in temperature and humidity when stored. They also allow inter-generational compatibility between different formats, ensuring that data can continue to be read even as formats evolve. This makes them a robust medium for long-term storage of content. Both companies have previously developed products based on the Blu-ray™ format, leveraging the strengths of optical discs. However, both Sony and Panasonic recognized that optical discs will need to accommodate much larger volumes of storage in years to come given the expected future growth in the archive market, and responded by formulating this agreement.

Sony previously commercialized a file-based optical disc archive system in September, 2012. Based on optical disc technology that Sony cultivated for its XDCAM series of professional broadcasting products, this system houses twelve optical discs within a compact cartridge as a single, high-capacity storage solution. Each disc within the cartridge holds 25GB capacity, offering a total range of storage capacities from 300GB to 1.5TB.

In July this year, Panasonic launched its ‘LB-DM9 series’ of optical disc storage devices. This series uses a dedicated magazine of just 20.8mm thickness to house twelve 100GB optical discs. A maximum of 90 magazines can be stored, providing a total storage capacity of 180TB. In addition, Panasonic adopted a newly-developed changer system together with RAID technology to offer rapid data transfer performance of up to 216MB/s, while also ensuring high reliability by protecting data from unforeseen faults.

In recent years, there has been an increasing need for archive capabilities, not only from video production industries, such as motion pictures and broadcasting, but also from cloud data centers that handle increasingly large volumes of data following the evolution in network services. Both Sony and Panasonic have a proven track record in developing Blu-ray Disc™ format technologies, and by actively promoting the adoption of a new standard for next-generation high-capacity optical discs, they intend to offer solutions that preserve valuable data for future generations.

Microsoft prices Xbox One controller at $60, headset at $25

Customers who want an extra controller with a Play and Charge Kit will pay $75.

Owning an Xbox One with multiple controllers could prove to be an expensive proposition.
The console, which is slated to launch later this year for $499.99, will come with one controller. Customers who want to buy another controller, however, will need to cough up $59.99. The Xbox One's controller with the Play and Charge Kit will set customers back $74.99.

Microsoft announced the Xbox One console earlier this year and provided more details at E3 this summer. Microsoft has promised that the Xbox One will deliver vastly improved visuals, as well as a host of entertainment features, to justify its price.
When the Xbox One hits the market, it will be joined by Sony's PlayStation 4 and the already-available Wii U. Sony's console, which is the closest competitor in terms of power and graphics to the Xbox One, will be $100 cheaper when it launches later this year.
In addition to controllers, Microsoft will sell an Xbox One Chat Headset for $24.99.

CORNING BRINGS GORILLA® GLASS NBT™ TO TOUCH-ENABLED NOTEBOOKS

New cover glass helps prevent damage to touchscreen displays; extends Corning Gorilla Glass into new market

Corning Incorporated (NYSE: GLW) today introduced its newest cover glass,Corning® Gorilla® Glass NBT™, designed to help protect touch notebook displays from scratches and other forms of damage that come from everyday handling and use.

Gorilla Glass NBT is Corning’s unique glass solution for touch-enabled notebooks. Touch is becoming the primary way consumers are interacting with their mobile devices; and with increased touch comes the potential for the glass to scratch. Scratches can result in the cover glass breaking, when the devices are subject to normal day-to-day usage. Corning Gorilla Glass NBT provides enhanced scratch resistance, reduced scratch visibility, and better retained strength once a scratch occurs to help protect notebook displays from breakage that can occur with lower-performing soda lime glass.

Consumers want thinner, sleeker and lighter-weight personal computers featuring touch technology. Noted as the next wave in touch technologies by market research groups, touch-enabled notebooks have the potential to approach the size of the current smartphone cover glass market within the next few years. Corning Gorilla Glass NBT delivers the cost-effective scratch and damage resistance that consumers have come to expect of the world’s leading cover glass solution to this new mobile device market.

“Known as the cover glass of choice, Corning Gorilla Glass now extends its exceptional capabilities into the emerging touch-enabled notebook market,” said James R. Steiner, senior vice president and general manager, Corning Specialty Materials. “We are confident that Corning Gorilla Glass NBT will outperform legacy soda lime glass, delivering eight to ten times more scratch resistance. In fact, for just one to two percent of a notebook’s retail price, consumers can now get the best cover glass solution: a Gorilla solution. Simply put, we believe that if you don’t have Gorilla on your device, it’s not as good.”

Similar to a handheld or tablet device, the consumer’s physical interaction intensifies with a touch-enabled notebook device to include swiping, tapping, gripping and cleaning. Everyday interaction with these notebook devices can result in scratched cover glass and a compromised user experience. Corning’s consumer research indicates that complaint rates for scratching on notebooks are already up to four times higher compared to other mobile devices. Replacing the screen can be expensive and sometimes cost as much as half of the full notebook price, while leaving the user without a device for days.

“As a leader in touch-enabled computing, Dell is always seeking the finest materials to ensure our notebook screens are impact and scratch resistant,” said Sam Burd, vice president, PC Product Group, Dell. “We’re integrating Corning Gorilla Glass NBT into our new client devices launching this fall, further enhancing our industry leading product reliability and durability.”

Corning Gorilla Glass NBT is currently available and is expected to be featured on several notebook product models by leading global brands later this year.

For more information on Corning Gorilla Glass NBT, please visit www.corninggorillaglass.com.

New Exynos 5 Octa (5420) crushes Nexus 10 in benchmark

Yesterday, Samsung announced the new Exynos 5 Octa (Exynos 5420) chip based on ARM Mali-T628 silicon. The new AP is 20 percent more faster than its predecessor (Exynos 5410), claims Samsung. However, the most significant change is the graphics processing unit, it’s the industry’s first SoC to feature a six-core GPU.
Engadget got some hands-on with a prototype device featuring the new Exynos 5420 SoC over at SIGGRAPH 2013. Samsung put the prototype up against a Nexus 10 in a benchmark fight, and the prototype crushed it! Currently, Nexus 10 is the only device to pack the most powerful GPU, packing an Exynos 5 Dual (5250) SoC with Mali-T604 GPU, so comparing the Exynos 5420-packed prototype with a Nexus 10 was certainly the right choice.
As you can see from the video, the prototype scored almost double the points as of the Nexus 10. During the benchmark, the prototype was smooth as silk with no issues whatsoever, while the Nexus 10 was a struggling. We are looking forward to seeing the new Exynos 5420 go up against the Exynos 5410 and the Snapdragon 800 SoCs.
