Vastar to team up with III for WiMAX content development

Vastar Cable TV System, a WiMAX licensee for the southern region of Taiwan, plans to team up with the Institute for Information Industry (III) to develop content applications for its WiMAX service. The two parties are scheduled to sign cooperation plans on June 12.

Vastar plans to spend NT$500 million (US$16.5 million) over the next five years to develop the content applications which will focus on entertainment, surveillance and communications, said the III.

The III will also assist Vastar to install a brand new optical fiber network for its cable TV business, as well as to help allocate technological partners for equipment and services, III noted.

Meanwhile, Vastar also plans to initially spend NT$800 million to purchase about 200,000 IP STBs (set-top boxes) to expand its broadband and cable TV systems, according to Vastar spokesman Ramos Hsu.

Vastar is expected to purchase a total of one million IP STBs over the next two years, with Taiwan-based STB makers likely to take up all the released orders, estimated market sources in Taiwan.
