Chinesegamer International, Gamania Digital Entertainment and Wayi International Digital Entertainment, three developers and/or operators of online games in Taiwan, have begun launching web games (also called browser games) in the local Taiwan market in June-July 2008 and will launch a number of other games over the rest of the year, according to industry sources.
Chinesegamer plans to launch 15 web games in total in 2008, while Wayi launched two web games in July and will add one or two in each month of August-December 2008, the sources indicated.
The average development cost of a web game is about 10% of that of a 2D or 3D online game and the average development time is only half a year, compared with two years for online games, the sources pointed out. However, the time spent in playing a web game is much shorter than in playing an online game and therefore the potential sales revenues are smaller.
Operators of PC-based web games are looking to tap the market potential of mobile handset web games, but such a market is not expected to take off for another 2-3 years, the sources pointed out.
