Motorola PKI Center Selected As Root Certificate Vendor For Wimax Forum

Leading provider of WiMAX™ infrastructure, devices, services and network deployments also renowned for device security authentication expertise

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - February 5, 2009 – Motorola, Inc., (NYSE: MOT) today announced that Motorola’s public key infrastructure (PKI) Center of Excellence in San Diego has been selected by the WiMAX Forum® to be a root certificate authority for WiMAX devices worldwide. Devices that will connect to a WiMAX™ network - such as cell phones, laptop computers and portable media players – are generally required to have a device certificate in order for that device to be authenticated and then become functional on that network.

Motorola’s PKI center, recognized for its leadership in content security, is one of the largest producers of keys and certificates for hardware devices worldwide. More than $65B of premium entertainment content and data services are under the protection of Motorola’s PKI security every year. Motorola’s PKI Center has produced more than 650 million certificates since inception. 180 million certificates were issued in 2008 alone to authenticate and secure services to devices of all types including cell phones, cable and satellite set top boxes, cable modems, portable media players, two-way radios, and more. With the expected growth in WiMAX end-user devices, Motorola is uniquely positioned to securely generate and rapidly deliver the high volumes of device certifications that manufacturers will require.

“As a leading provider of WiMAX infrastructure, devices, and services, Motorola is ideally qualified to provide this service for the WiMAX Forum and its member companies,” said Mark Depietro, vice president, Strategy and Business Development, Broadband Home Solutions, Motorola. “Our understanding of the complex WiMAX ecosystem, and our experience in mass-scale secure, global hardware manufacturing, assures that Motorola can provide WiMAX device manufacturers the highest quality, lowest costs solutions for their PKI needs. Motorola’s real-world security experience is unmatched. Our MediaCipher™ security system, the foundation of our PKI technology, has been deployed for more than 15 years in over 80 million digital television set tops worldwide without a breach.”

“Ensuring secure communication over WiMAX-based networks is critical for the successful growth of the WiMAX ecosystem,” said Matt Wangler, director of operations of the WiMAX Forum, a not-for-profit organization that promotes the adoption of WiMAX-compatible products and services. “Seamless security that is transparent to the end user is also crucial for widespread adoption. We selected Motorola because of its long track record in providing PKI solutions that feature the scalability and reliability required for WiMAX technology to flourish. With Motorola, WiMAX is in good hands.”
