Yahoo!'s 2009 Fantasy Football Season Kicks Off With Mayors From 11 Major U.S. Cities Competing on Its Gridiron

This Year's Leagues Go Mobile with New iPhone and Blackberry Apps and More.

SUNNYVALE, Calif., -- Yahoo! Sports, the web's leading sports site and home of the #1 fantasy football game, will kick off its 12th fantasy football season by fostering some friendly competition among mayors from big football cities across the nation. The Yahoo! Sports Mayoral Face-off competition matches mayors head-to-head each week of the fantasy football season, which kicks off on September 10 and concludes on December 28. The winning mayor takes home $15,000 for the local non-profit sports program of his or her choice. And in a battle for civic pride, a second $15,000 donation will be awarded to the city with the most votes from fantasy fans.

Mayors who are putting their football prowess on the line for this competition include:

-- Byron Brown (Buffalo, NY) -- Buddy Dyer (Orlando, FL)

-- Jim Schmitt (Green Bay, WI) -- Luke R. Ravenstahl (Pittsburgh, PA)

-- Ron Dellums (Oakland, CA) -- Kevin Johnson (Sacramento, CA)

-- Mark Funkhouser (Kansas City, MO) -- Gavin Newsom (San Francisco, CA)

-- R.T. Rybak (Minneapolis, MN) -- Pam Iorio (Tampa Bay, FL)

-- Mick Cornett (Oklahoma City, OK)

There's no telling if the City of Lakes has what it takes to overtake Titletown, or if Oaktown will step it up and beat The City across the Bay. Maybe this is the year that Cigar City gets smoked by O.K.C., or the City of Fountains drowns out The City of Good Neighbors' chances. There's also a chance that the City of Bridges leaves an indelible mark on the City Beautiful. No matter what happens, the inaugural Yahoo! Sports Mayoral Face-off promises to be exciting for all. During the season fans can check out the mayors' starting line-ups and team roster changes at http://football.fantasysports.yahoo.com/league/mayoral_faceoff09.

Starting on Thursday, August 13 fans can also help their favorite city score the second $15,000 donation by voting at http://football.fantasysports.yahoo.com/f2/mayoral-faceoff. The winning city with the most passionate fantasy football fans will be announced on September 11, 2009. The ultimate prize of the Yahoo! Sports Fantasy Football Mayoral Face-off title will be announced on January 11, 2010.

This year, Yahoo! fantasy football enthusiasts will be able to track their favorite team's success right in the palm of their hands. On September 8th, Yahoo! Fantasy Football goes mobile, launching three different ways to stay on top of their game. Included in the Yahoo! Mobile offering will be an iPhone app, a BlackBerry app, and a version for the mobile web. With mobile fantasy football you can get real-time scores and player stats, the ability to bench and start different players, and even the ability to trade with others in your league - all through your mobile device.

Yahoo!'s 2009 fantasy football season isn't just open to mayors. Players can register at http://football.fantasysports.yahoo.com until October 23, 2009. Fantasy football allows users to build a team of professional football players, through drafts, trades and free-agent signings, and then watch as the team's success is measured by the on-field statistics of the players.

This season, Yahoo! Sports Fantasy Football is offering free real-time scoring with StatTracker(R), which gives fans more features including:

Ability to track multiple leagues at the same time Increased data delivery speed New chat feature that lets fans "talk smack" in real-time
"Yahoo! Sports Fantasy Football is where millions of avid players - and now a select group of mayors - turn for the most reliable game season after season," said Kyle Laughlin, head of Yahoo! Sports. "There's no doubt that our users will love talking smack, following their team in real time with free StatTracker(R), or executing trades with our new app for the iPhone. With all of these new features, it's no surprise why we're the #1 fantasy game in town."
