Tech Talk: Service Provider-Software Defined Networking

Ignacio Más of Ericsson, explains the key architectural concepts behind SP-SDN and clarifies in simple terms the different aspects of the SP-SDN architectural framework.

Service provider networks are experiencing an architectural evolution so that they become more dynamic and programmable in nature. Software Defined Networking (SDN) is one of the key components of this evolution and Ericsson's vision for Service Provider Software Defined Networking (SP-SDN) sets the direction towards a flexible network ready for the Networked Society.

In this video, Ignacio Más, one of Ericsson's Experts working in the Chief Technology Officer office, explains the key architectural concepts behind SP-SDN and clarifies in simple terms the different aspects of the SP-SDN architectural framework. Ignacio also highlights the challenges that current IP networks face in order to accommodate the demands of users and enterprises in the Networked Society as well as the way SP-SDN addresses those challenges.

Mobily selects Ericsson’s Smart Services Router

Ericsson has been selected by Mobily to upgrade its Evolved Packet Core (EPC) networks in western region of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, using the SSR 8000 family of Smart Service Routers
Consumers will be able to consume four times the current amount of data on the enhanced capacity network
As part of the agreement, Ericsson will also provide systems integration, design and managed services
Etihad Etisalat, Mobily has selected Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) to provide EPC networks in the western region of the Kingdom. As a result, Mobily subscribers will be able to access and consume four times more data than the network was previously capable of.

Nasser Al-Nasser, Chief Operations Officer at Mobily, says: “In order to provide our customers with an unparalleled mobile-broadband experience, we constantly look for ways to efficiently maintain and increase network availability and enhanced Quality of Service (QoS) to support LTE. Selecting Ericsson as our partner to upgrade the packet core network enables us to provide ultra-fast data speeds for consumers in the western region of the Kingdom. This partnership not only increases the data capability of our networks fourfold; it also supports our long-term vision of maintaining a highly reliable, efficient and robust network.”

As part of the agreement, Ericsson will upgrade the EPC network with the Evolved Packet Gateway based on the SSR 8000 family to support LTE and prepare the network for Voice over LTE. The enhanced capacity of the network will allow Mobily customers to use and consume bandwidth-hungry applications and services, while maintaining high quality of experience for all users.

Ali Eid, President of Ericsson, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, says: “As users rapidly adopt new technologies, it is vital for operators to keep their networks up-to-date with dynamic solutions that are capable of efficiently handling increasing bandwidth demands. Ericsson’s core network solution will equip Mobily with the latest technology to increase data bandwidth, provide an unprecedented customer experience and increase revenues.”

Better access to 4G/LTE, which is designed to transfer large amounts of data efficiently and is considered the most advanced ICT technology today, will allow Mobily to meet growing consumer demands for innovative, complex mobile-broadband services.

As part of the agreement, Ericsson will also provide systems integration, design and managed services, extending the scope of the existing managed services partnership with Mobily, which started in 2005.

To date, Ericsson has taken 51 contracts for the SSR 8000 family of Smart Service Routers, which is one of the key components of its 4G IP network vision.

Huawei signed a letter of intent with Ericsson and Nokia Siemens Networks

Huawei announced the signing of a letter of intent for the Initiative interoperability of operational support (Operations Support System Interoperability Initiative - OSSii) with Ericsson and Nokia Siemens Networks.

How otmachayut in Huawei, OSSii initiative aims to simplify the process of interaction between OSS systems in networks that use equipment from different manufacturers. The list of problems to be solved within the framework of OSSii, is to organize access to the interfaces that previously imposed limitations. In addition, it is planned to implement a wide range of services, interoperability testing. The key principles of the OSSii are openness, fairness, reasonableness and no undue restrictions of rights.

Key players in the industry agree that the effective interaction of OSS different manufacturers to reduce integration costs OSS, simplify the overall process of network management and reduce time to market for new services. In addition, OSSii encourages healthy competition between OSS systems network layer.

While in the process of cross-licensing OSS interfaces to manage multi-vendor network will be attended only three companies, but in the long term for the process of cross-licensing and testing of interaction will be involved, and other manufacturers of OSS and network equipment.

Ericsson and Telstra test fastest ever optical connection in Australia

Telstra and Ericsson have successfully conducted the first trial of 1Tbps technology in Australia over 995km of its existing optical fiber network between Sydney and Melbourne.

Ericsson has demonstrated optical technology leadership by taking ultra-fast terabit transmission out of the lab and verifying its performance over real operator optical cables. The successful test confirms that operators will be in a position to deploy it to meet their capacity requirements when 1Tbps is eventually commercialized.

"This has been over two years in the making, and our teams have collaboratively come together to demonstrate the evolution of technology," says David Robertson, Director of Transport and Routing Engineering, Telstra. "Telstra actually owns the most fiber in the country. To be able to prove that the fiber we have in the ground can carry terabit services is a fantastic position for us to be in."

"Like so many developed countries, Australia is a very technologically advanced market and Australians are sophisticated users of broadband and mobile technology," says Alessandro Pane, Head of Ericsson R&D Optical Transmission. "The trial has proven that our existing optical cable plant can support terabit channels along with 40Gbps and 100Gbps channels simultaneously on the same fiber."

Ericsson has announced it will provide Telstra with the SPO 1400, the latest packet optical transport platform (POTP) for the metro and the MHL 3000 for long-haul applications with 100Gbps service support. The trial tested a 1Tbps line card in the MHL 3000.

The terabit solution used in the trial has some important advantages, including innovative frequency packing for high spectral efficiency, software configurable optical characteristics and advanced forward error correction for superior performance of the communications channel.

"With the growing demand on our networks for new services and capabilities, knowing that our infrastructure can grow to meet those requirements is very important for us," says Andrew Leong, Principal Domain Expert, Optical, Telstra. "Ericsson has been a close strategic partner of Telstra for many years, and it was good to continue that close collaboration and working to make sure that this trial was a success."
