HTC and Asustek to battle for Touch UI market in 4Q with 5.0-megapixel smartphones

High Tech Computer (HTC) and Asustek Computer are both planning to launch their first 5.0-megapixel camera, touch-screen smartphones in the fourth quarter of this year, heating up competition between the two companies in the touch user interface smartphone market, according to market sources.

HTC plans to launch the HTC Touch HD firstly in Europe, with a 3.8-inch widescreen WVGA display, standard 3.5mm headphone jack, TouchFLO 3D interface and multimedia functions. It will support 3.5G, Wi-Fi and GPS/AGPS functions and be powered by a Qualcomm MSM7201a 528MHz processor, the sources noted.

Peter Chou, president and CEO of HTC, pointed out that the Touch HD will offer consumers high-quality mobile multimedia and internet experiences.

Asustek's Glaxy7 will feature the company's recently debuted Glide UI and a 3.5-inch screen. The handset will also support 3.5G, Wi-Fi and AGPS functions. Since the Glaxy 7 is similar to Samsung Electronics' Omnia handsets in design, some market watchers are even calling the Glaxy 7 the "Omnia killer."

The sources noted that Asustek may launch a series of touch UI phones in the fourth quarter to compete with Apple, Samsung and LG Electronics. HTC will also introduce the Touch 3G using Qualcomm's MSM7225 528MHz processor and the Touch Viva with Texas Instruments' (TI's) OMAP 850 200MHz processor in October to target the mid-range segment.
