The all-new Google Nexus 7

Nexus 7 brings you the perfect mix of power and portability, and features the world's sharpest 7" tablet screen.

Sign up today and we'll give you a heads up when you can get your new Google Nexus 7, on Google Play or at a retailer near you.

Google publishes Nexus 7 sign-up page

Those outside the U.S. can sign up to learn when the new tablet will become available

The new Nexus 7 is available now in the U.S., but Google has been rather vague with its information about international availability for the tablet. The UK, Germany, South Korea, Japan, Spain, Canada, France and Australia are set to get the new Nexus 7 "in the coming weeks," though retailer listings have suggested it could be as late as mid-September before the tablet launches in some of these countries.

In any case, Google now has a registration page in place for those outside the United States, where international buyers can sign-up to learn when the new Nexus will be available "on Google Play or at a retailer near you." If you're interested, you can hit the link below. And naturally, keep it locked to AC over the next month for more news on international Nexus 7 availability.

New Nexus 7 listed for pre-order in the UK, release slated for September [Updated]

Prices to start at £199.99 for 16GB, £239.99 for 32GB

Update: Ebuyer is now listing the new Nexus 7 for pre-order too, with availability expected for Aug. 29. That's a couple weeks before Dixons' stock date, but still a good month beyond the U.S. launch window.

Original story: The new Nexus 7 tablet might be hitting the U.S. before the end of July, but consumers in the UK could be in for a substantially longer wait if a couple of major retailers are to be believed. Currys and PC World, both parts of the Dixons group, are listing the 16 and 32-gigabyte versions of the tablet for pre-order, priced at £199.99 and £239.99 respectively. But the tablets are listed with an availability date of Sep. 13, some six weeks after the U.S. launch.

While pre-order dates are subject to change, Currys and PC World were retail launch partners for the 2012 Nexus 7, so there's a good chance they aren't just pulling this date out of thin air. There's also no sign of the European 4G Nexus 7, so UK buyers wanting to take advantage of LTE data on the new tablet could be in for an even longer wait.

We've heard nothing specific about international availability from Google, and at yesterday's launch event the company told attendees that other countries would be getting the tablet "in the coming weeks." The UK was named as one of the first wave of countries to get the new tablet following the U.S. launch, along with Germany, South Korea, Japan, Spain, Canada, France and Australia.

Meanwhile the UK Google Play Store continues to list last year's Nexus 7, with prices starting at £159 for 16GB + Wifi.

2013 U.S. Tablet Satisfaction Study--Volume 1

J.D. Power and Associates Reports:
As Tablets Become More Popular, Sharing among Household Members
Has Significant Impact on Future Brand Selection

Apple Ranks Highest in Owner Satisfaction with Tablet Devices for a Second Consecutive Time

As more households continue to adopt tablets, the act of sharing these devices has substantial influence on the purchase-decision process and on future brand selection, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2013 U.S. Tablet Satisfaction StudySM--Volume 1 released today.

Key Findings
  • Tablet owners who also have a smartphone spend 36 percent more time browsing the Internet on their tablet than on their smartphone.
  • Twenty-seven percent of tablet owners say they are likely to buy a new tablet within the next 12 months, compared with 37 percent in 2012.
  • Ninety-four percent of highly satisfied tablet owners are likely to purchase additional consumer electronic devices from the same manufacturer.
Now in its second year, the study measures tablet owner satisfaction among those who have owned their tablet for one year or less. Satisfaction is measured across five key factors (in order of importance): performance (26%); ease of operation (22%); styling and design (19%); features (17%); and cost (16%).

The study finds that 51 percent of tablet owners share their device with at least one other person. While the incidence differs across brands, tablet manufacturers may benefit from promoting shared usage as a selling point, as satisfaction increases when more people use one tablet device. When a tablet is only used by one person, overall satisfaction is 824 (on a 1,000-point scale), 28 points lower than when a tablet is shared by four or more persons (852).

"It is somewhat unexpected to find that although 64 percent of tablet owners were the sole decision-maker involved in their device purchase, many of them share their tablet with someone else," said Kirk Parsons, senior director of telecommunications services at J.D. Power and Associates. "It is important that manufacturers understand this dynamic and try to provide an exceptional experience for all users since this may improve future business prospects, as high satisfaction through sharing a tablet device may result in owners handing down their tablet to a family member or friend, and the likelihood of repurchasing a new tablet from the same brand and running the same operating system increases."

In fact, 41 percent of tablet owners who share their device among four or more persons indicate they "definitely will" repurchase their next tablet from their current tablet manufacturer, compared with 28 percent among those who do not share their device with any other person. This shared usage is not limited to adults. Nearly one-half (46%) of tablet owners have children who also use their tablet.  Among owners who indicate they share their device with children, 30 percent have downloaded education apps, compared with 16 percent among those who do not share their device with children.

Tablets are also being used for business activities, with 20 percent of owners indicating they use their tablet for this purpose. Owners of tablets that originally evolved from e-readers are not as likely to use their device to engage in business activity. While tablet owners are beginning to engage in business activities with their device, just 31 percent of employers contribute to the price or reimburse their employees for the entire tablet purchase price, a 3-percentage-point decrease from 2012. This may be an indication that some companies may be promoting a "bring your own device" (BYOD) strategy.

For the second consecutive study, Apple ranks highest among manufacturers of tablets in overall owner satisfaction. Apple achieves a score of 836 and performs well in four factors: performance; ease of operation; styling and design; and features. Amazon (829) closely follows Apple in the rankings and performs particularly well in the cost factor.

The 2013 U.S. Tablet Satisfaction Study--Volume 1 findings are based on experiences evaluated by 1,857 tablet owners. The study was fielded in February 2013.

Google and Asustek Computer rumored to be planning US$99 Nexus 7 for the end of 2012

Google is reportedly making two new versions of the Nexus 7 that are expected to be thinner, and will use TN panels made by Taiwan-based panel maker HannStar Display, according to industry sources.

One of the models will be priced at US$199 while the other will be priced US$99, and both models are expected to hit markets by the end of 2012, added the sources.

The sources speculated that Google is preparing for increased competition from Apple when the reported 7.85-inch iPad is released in the fourth quarter of 2012, and wants its device to maintain growing sales.

Meanwhile, HannStar has also reportedly entered the supply chain for Apple's iPad series but has yet to comment on whether it will be working with Google or Apple.

Asustek has denied the reports.

The new Nexus 7 variants will reportedly use Twisted nematic (TN) display panels made by Taiwanese panel maker HannStar Display, which apparently has also joined the supply chain for Apple’s iPad. But the company has made no comment on whether it’ll be working with Apple or Google or both.

Both the two new Nexus tablets are expected to launch by the end of 2012, according to the sources of DigiTimes.

ASUS EP101TC (Now) Shipping with Android in Q1 2011

Today the Netbook News team went down to the ASUS headquarters to hang out with the Eee Pad team, and we learned something that actually made us breath a sigh of relief. The EP101TC pad will dropping Windows CE and will be shipped with Android. Rather than running an outdated Windows CE, ASUS and the majority of tablet manufacturers will be relying on Google’s Operating System. There is no further insight in Android 3.0 or Gingerbread but we have to admit we are pretty curious to find out what happens in the Fall. ASUS is planning on waiting for the 3.0 dust to settle and launch in Q1 of 2011 with products on display at CES. If you just can’t wait until January, you might be able to grab a sneak peak with some telcos as they will be delivering the good first to them in December.

ASUS Eee Pad EP101TC to get Android instead of Windows Embedded

ASUS has apparently decided to ditch Windows 7 Embedded on their Eee Pad EP101TC and replace it with Android. The 12.2mm thick touchscreen slate was launched at Computex earlier this year, with a 10-inch display and 675g chassis; according to NetbookNews, ASUS’ original plan to use Microsoft’s cut-down embedded version of Windows 7 has been dumped in favor of Google’s open-source OS.

The actual version of the Android OS used is unclear. ASUS are said to be waiting for Android 3.0 Gingerbread to arrive before announcing their next crop of devices at CES 2011 in January next year, and NetbookNews.de claim the company is using 2.2 Froyo for their prototype but will likely ship with 3.0. 3G versions are also tipped.

Netbook from ASUS with Nvidia Ion 2 will be released in April

Originally released on the market netbooks do not have the hardware capabilities and supports playback of HD video quality. One solution to this problem has become a platform Nvidia Ion, which was demonstrated at CES 2009. And, as we already reported, it is replaced by a platform developed by Nvidia Ion 2. One of the first new platform will get the device production Asustek Computer, a popular series of Eee PC. In this line of appearance of the first devices with the graphic platform Nvidia Ion 2 should be expected in April this year.

At present the company produces ASUS netbooks based on the processor Intel Atom N270, N280 and N450. It is expected that soon will be released a model with 12-inch diagonal screen. In this model, built on the basis of processor N270 and N280, will be gradually removed from the market, and the cost of devices with N450 in the second quarter will be reduced. Until the end of February the company intends to release a 10-inch model with a rotating screen, and from April to begin shipping netbook platform Nvidia Ion 2. Netbook with 12-inch screen sizes will be built not on the basis of processor Intel Atom, but will have a platform AMD Congo. Also in N-series devices will appear with the ports of USB 3.0.
