Asustek and Acer planning Android-powered smartphones, say sources

Asustek Computer and Acer are both planning to expand their smartphone product lines by venturing into the production of Android-powered models, according to market sources.

While launching Linux-based Garmin-Asus dual-brand Nuvifone G60 and Windows Mobile-based M20 at the ongoing Mobile World Congress (MWC), Asustek-Garmin's Android-powered smartphones are expected to hit the market in the first half the year at the earliest, the sources noted.

Following its acquisition of Window Mobile-based handset maker E-Ten Information Systems in 2008, Acer is currently focusing on marketing Windows Mobile-enabled smartphones.

In order to increase its penetration into the global smartphone market, Acer is set to develop Android-powered models, with plans to launch two Android handsets by the end of this year, according to sources familiar with the company's roadmap.
