Samsung to begin competing with HTC in Android-powered handset segment in 3Q09

Samsung Electronics will be the first among the top-five handset vendors to roll out Android-powered handsets, and the company will start competing for market share in the Android segment with HTC (High Tech Computer) as early as in the third quarter of this year, according to market sources.

Based on information leaked from Samsung, the company's first Android handset will be similar to HTC's forthcoming HTC Magic handset in design and hardware specifications, and both models will be built with 3.5G chipset solutions from Qualcomm, the sources noted.

However, the sources contended that HTC will be able to maintain its lead in the Android segment, given that the company has already launched the T-Mobile G1 and will launch the HTC Magic in the second quarter.

In addition to the HTC Magic, HTC plans to launch at least two more Android-powered handsets in 2009, company president and CEO Peter Chou said at a Merrill Lynch technology conference held in Taipei recently.
