Taiwan market: Touchscreen handsets to dominate market in 2Q09

The Taiwan handset market is set to become a battle field for touchscreen-enabled mobile phones in the second quarter as HTC (High Tech Computer), Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics (LGE) all plan to launch new touchscreen models, according to market sources.

To help push its market share, HTC plans to launch a Chinese-version of it Android-powered HTC Magic and the HTC Touch Diamond2 in the Taiwan market in April, the sources noted.

In terms of unit sales, HTC ranked as the eighth largest vendor with a 1.2% share in Taiwan in February, compared to Apple iPhone 3G's sixth ranking with a 2.2% share. In terms of sales value, HTC captured the sixth ranking with a 4.6% share, lagging behind Apple's fourth ranking with an 8.9% share, according to data compiled by retail channels in Taiwan.

Samsung also plans to launch its sliding form factor touchscreen-enabled S8300 in the local market in April. The S8300 will come with a 2.8-inch WQVGA AMOLED display, 8-megapixel camera and support AGPS technology, the sources noted.

Meanwhile, LGE will launch its flagship touchscreen model, the KM900 (Arena), which will feature a S-class touch-controlled interface and 3.8-inch WVGA display, and support Wi-Fi, GPS and 3.5G standards, indicated the sources.

Samsung and LGE took up the third and fourth rankings, respectively, in the Taiwan market in terms of unit sales in February, during which handset sales totaled 658,700 units, up 3.6% on month but down 4.1% on year, according to data available at the retail channels.
