Acer expects notebook shipments to grow 25-30% sequentially in 2Q09

Acer chairman JT Wang expects notebook shipments in the second quarter to grow 25-30% sequentially thanks to netbooks and the company's new Timeline ultra-thin notebook series.

Wang said he expects global PC shipments this year to hold level on year due to the economic decline, adding that the desktop PC segment is expected to drop 15-20%, while the notebook segment has the potential to see double-digit growth.

For the second quarter, global desktop shipments will see an on-year drop of 5-10%, while notebook shipments will see growth of 35-40%, Wang forecast.

Currently, markets in Europe contribute around 60% of Acer's revenues, North America around 25-30%, and China 4%. Acer is hoping to lift its notebook sales in China to achieve more of a balance in each zone.

Wang revealed that Acer shipped 20 million notebooks, eight million desktops and 16 million LCD monitors in 2008. Acer expects its share of 2009 global notebook shipments to grow another 2-3% on top of its 17.7% share in 2008. According to market watcher estimates, Acer is aiming to ship 26 million notebooks and 10 million netbooks in 2009.

With plans to launch 20-30 models of its new Aspire Timeline ultra-thin notebook series including 11.6-inch, 13.3-inch, 14-inch and 15.6-inch sizes in the second quarter, Wang estimated that the emerging ultra-thin notebook segment will account for 50% of the total notebook market by 2011, an equivalent to a total volume of 100 million units.

Acer is currently developing its third-generation netbook which will be ready by the end of the year and is expected to feature a touch screen. A fourth-generation will be launched in 2010.

For the handset segment, Acer will launch three smartphones in the first half of the year, and has more new products in development for the second half.
