MTI to team up with international players to venture into China 3G base station market

Taiwan-based telecom equipment maker Microelectronics Technology (MTI) plans to cooperate with international telecom equipment players to aggressively venture into the 3G base station market in China after it completes the acquisition of the remote radio head (RRH) business unit of TelASIC Communications, according to company president Allen Yen.

Alcatel-Lucent, one of the major clients of MTI, has landed orders for WCDMA base stations from China Unicom, and MTI is expected to start supplying RRH components for the WCDMA base stations via Alcatel-Lucent in the second half of 2009, the Chinese-language Economic Daily News (EDN) quoted Yen as saying.

In addition, MTI is also expected to land a windfall of orders for power amplifiers (APs) for base stations since Alcatel-Lucent has also secured orders for US$1.7 billion worth of CDMA 2000 and TD-SCDMA network equipment, respectively, from China Telecom and China Mobile.

Shipments of APs grew 80% sequentially in the first quarter of this year to account for 28% of MTI's total revenues, EDN quoted company data as indicating.
