Sprint Surpasses Cell Phone Collection Goal

Sprint-EPA partnership resulted in 279,524 wireless devices recycled in April

OVERLAND PARK, Kan., -- Sprint (NYSE: S) announced it exceeded its goal of collecting more than 250,000 wireless devices in April, a goal established to support the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) "Plug-In To eCycling National Cell Phone Recycling Week" April 6-12, 2009. Sprint collected a total of 279,524 phones during the month of April.

"We thank Sprint customers and all cell phone users for helping us exceed our collection goal of 250,000 wireless devices in April," said Ralph Reid, Sprint vice president of Corporate Social Responsibility. "This achievement illustrates how consumers can and will participate in eCycling efforts. Thanks to those who answered Sprint's call to recycle, we are another step closer toward achieving our larger goal of reaching a 90 percent device collection rate by 2017."

Sprint leads the industry in wireless recycling through its consumer outreach efforts. Since 2001, Sprint wireless recycling programs have diverted more than 16 million cell phones from landfills for reuse or recycling. Sprint's device collection rate is just under 35 percent, more than three times the national wireless recycling average.

"While we are grateful for strong April participation levels, eCycling is a year-round activity," Reid noted. "Those with old phones stuck in drawers who missed the April collection effort can still participate."

Sprint enables customers to print out postage-paid wireless recycling labels at touch screens located at all Sprint-owned retail stores throughout the United States or to recycle their unused phones through two free and easy collection programs, Sprint Buyback and Sprint Project Connect(SM).

Sprint Buyback allows Sprint customers to return eligible Sprint or Nextel devices in exchange for account credit. Customers can participate in the Sprint Buyback program by going to www.sprint.com/recycle, calling toll-free (866) 364-5680 or going to any of the nearly 1,200 Sprint-owned retail stores nationwide.
Sprint Project Connect accepts all wireless phones, batteries, accessories and data cards, regardless of carrier or condition. Free postage-paid envelopes are available at any Sprint-owned retail store and are included in the boxes with most new phones sold by Sprint. Free postage-paid mailing labels are also available at www.sprint.com/recycle. All net proceeds generated from the wireless equipment collected by Sprint Project Connect help keep kids safer online through Sprint's 4NetSafetySM program. Charitable partners include the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children and the (National Education Association?) (NEA) Health Information Network.

Wireless recycling is a key component of Sprint's environmental priority to reduce the environmental impact of our products and services, one of Sprint's six environmental priorities.
