Google welcomes China white-box handset makers to adopt Android platform, says paper

Google welcomes China-based white-box handset makers to develop smartphones based on Android platform, the Chinese-language Commercial Times quoted Kai-Fu Lee, president of Google Greater China, as saying.

While a number of branded handset vendors such as Dopod, Lenovo, Dell and LG Electronics (LGE) are ready to launch Android-powered smartphones in China, Lee's remarks will encourage more China-based white-box handset makers to also climb on the Android bandwagon, the paper indicated.

Android-based platform is likely to become the main operating system for smartphones in the China market in the first half of 2010 as handset design houses in China, including Longcheer, SIM Technology, TechFaith Wireless and HiSilicon Technologies, in addition to service provider China Mobile, have all stepped into the development of Android-powered smartphones, the paper added.
