Taiwan market: CHT to start offering HSPA+ service in 2010

Chunghwa Telecom (CHT) has announced that it will start offering HSPA+ enabled service with download speeds of 21Mbps in 2010. Other carriers in Taiwan, including Far EasTone Telecommunications (FET), Taiwan Mobile and Vibo Telecom, are expected to follow suit after CHT implements the service.

Initially, CHT will offer the HSPA+ service through software upgrading at its current networks that will be implemented by telecom solution provider Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN), CHT said.

NSN and other telecom equipment provider such as Ericsson will benefit when other carriers in Taiwan begin to build up their HSPA+ networks, according to industry sources in Taiwan.

Initial applications pertaining to the HSPA+ service will include data network cards, USB dongles and wireless modules before extending to also cover smartphones, netbooks and notebooks, the sources added.

China-based ZTE and Huawei Technology as well as Taiwan-based BandRich may receive the majority of orders for HSPA+ CPE products from the Taiwan carriers, the sources asserted.
