Compal Communications will begin to use handset solutions, including 3G TD-SCDMA chips, from MediaTek for handset production, according to Compal chairman Ray Chen.
By 2011, chipset solutions from MediaTek will account for 80% of Compal's production of entry-level and mid-range handsets, Chen said.
Compal also aims to boost the ratio of smartphones to 50% of its total handset production in 2010, said Chen, noting that shipments of TD-SCDMA models alone will account for 10% of total shipments. Compal will launch TS-SCDMA handsets in the first half of 2010.
Smartphones will account for 20% of Compal's total handset shipments of 10 million units projected for 2009, according to a Chinese-language Economic Daily News report.
