TD-SCDMA subscriber base to increase by over 20 million in 2010, says Leadcore president

The number of TD-SCDMA handset subscribers is expected to increase by more than 20 million in 2010, according to an estimate of Sun Yuwang, president of Leadcore Technology, a provider of TD-SCDMA solutions in China.

Other sources in China have even projected that TD-SCDMA subscribers are likely to increase 20-40 million in 2010, and China Mobile, the TD-SCDMA network operator in China, has also estimated its TD-SCAMA subscriber base to increase by 40 million in the coming year.

Buoyed by the increase in the subscriber base and the replacement demand, China Mobile's purchase of TD-SCDMA handsets could top 100 million units in 2010, according to an estimate of Yang Ye, secretary general of China-based TD-SCDMA Alliance.

To push the penetration of its TD-SCDMA networks and to expand its subscriber base, China Mobile has decided to adopt TD-SCDMA/GSM dual-mode handsets in 2010 to attract more users to switch to 3G-enabled mobile phones, Yang revealed.

A number of Taiwan makers, including HTC, Asustek Computer, Acer, BenQ, the Foxconn Group, have all entered the development of TD-SCDMA phones using Leadcore's TD-SCDMA solutions, Sun claimed, adding that Leadcore plans to launch HSPA+ solutions in 2011 and the LTE solutions in 2011-2012.
