Taiwan market: Motorola to launch Android- and Brew-enabled handsets

Motorola will launch two entry-level Android smartphones and a touch-screen handset based on Qualcomm's Brew Mobile Platform in August in cooperation with carrier Far EasTone Telecommunications (FET), according to the US-based vendor.

The two Android phones, the Quench MB501 and Quench XT3, run on Qualcomm chipsets, with the former model also being distributed via Taiwan's two other service providers, Chunghwa Telecom and Taiwan Mobile.

The EX300 touch-screen handset, which is manufactured by China's Huawei Technologies, is based on the Brew platform and carries a suggested retail price of NT$6,800 (US$208).

Motorola will introduce three to four more models in Taiwan by the end of 2010 to bring the year's total to eight. Its share of the Taiwan mobile phone market, however, has been on the decline in terms of volumes at 1.4% and ranking ninth in June. For sales value, it was ranked seventh with a 2.3% market share, up from 1% in March and April.

Market watchers estimate that Motorola will ship 12-13 million handsets in 2010.
