6 ways to add more inspiration in your day

Maybe the mornings are uninspired and the coffee isn’t triggering the brainwaves. Perhaps the music on the radio got a little stale and the news is depressing…
Maybe you’re a designer, a hipster, a teacher, a mom or an engineer just looking for a fresh start and ideas to do your job better. Fortunately, there are lots of ways to add inspiration to your life either online or offline.
Norwegian browser company Opera Software, whose mobile and desktop browsers are made to discover and explore inspiration online, provides several ideas and tips to add inspiration to your life.
Car Sunset Image
1. Visualize:
Find inspirational images (a skydiver in coastal Spain, a quaint town in Italy, a rice farmer in Vietnam) on the web and create a cool, inspirational image gallery on your blog. A simple search for “inspiration” on image-sharing sites such as Flickr or Instagram should do the trick.
2. Watch:
Need a more visual inspiration for your many pursuits? Pull up YouTube and watch amazing videos (such as Steve Job’s famous Stanford commencement speech, or one of the TED talks) to start your day off with wise words! Who knows you might be on to the next big thing.
3. Listen:
Nothing gets the brain cells going than listening to some soothing, inspirational music. Search for an “inspiration” playlist on Spotify – whether its soothing or upbeat music that gets you motivated. Or even better, download karaoke apps like Smule Sing! and sing with people around the world for even more fun. Our suggestion: “Don’t Stop Believing” by Journey.
4. Think:
Make a list of all the goals you have accomplished in the past year and what you’d like to achieve in the coming year. Put both lists as your screen saver or on your fridge door so you are constantly reminded of them.
5. Discover:
Go to your favorite Opera web browser, whether it’s on your smartphone or laptop, and browse the Discover section for interesting and inspirational stories. Select the “arts” or “food” category through the settings button and discover tantalizing content that will be a feast for both your eyes and your hunger.
6. Get out:
The best inspiration you can find is in nature. Find an amazing outdoors spot. Discover nature and appreciate the beauty. Document the sunsets and hikes through photos and share them on social networks.
“Inspiration is everything,” says Lars Boilesen, CEO, Opera Software. “I start every day finding inspirational thoughts, stories, ideas, images on the web with my Opera browser, whether it’s on my phone or my laptop. The web and the world are a treasure trove of inspirational ideas and you can start off right there.”
Download the Opera browser and discover all that the web has to offer!

LatAm embraces the mobile web

Latin America has been an area of economic growth in recent years, and this shows in the uptake of mobile web usage. The State of the Mobile Web report this month takes a closer look at the Latin American countries and their surfing habits.

The “big three”, Facebook, Google and YouTube, dominate the web landscape in Latin America, as well as in the Asia Pacific. In fact, across all regions in Latin America that enjoy Opera Mini, these three dominate their top 10 domains.

A few key trends:

The top Opera Mini user-growth countries in the region are Guatemala, Haiti, Nicaragua, Peru and Honduras.
The landscape of devices seems to be are bit more diverse than what was found in the last two State of the Mobile Web reports. There are fewer Nokia devices in the lists and more Samsung and BlackBerry devices.
Regional sites like MercadoLibre are represented three times in the top 10 lists. Local news sites are also well represented, especially in the smaller countries.

TV charmed by web standards and Adaptive Streaming

Opera brings support for HTML5 and Adaptive Streaming on STMicroelectronics’ set-top-box and TV systems-on-chip

More HTML5 in the world of TV means more entertainment options and a better web experience, regardless of which devices you use. Opera Software announced that its HTML5 technology has been added to STMicroelectronics’ STi7108 and STiH416 HD set-top-box systems-on-chip, as well as FLI76xx “Newman” and FLI75xx “Freeman” TV systems-on-chip. The all-new Opera SDK 3.4 will also include pre-integrated support for the most used adaptive bitrate protocols: Apple HTTP Live Streaming (HLS), Microsoft Smooth Streaming, and several profiles of MPEG DASH.

HTML5 is an open web standard for interactive multimedia content that Opera Software has been supporting for a long time. HTML5 is winning commitment from internet working groups, content providers and end-product developers. Emerging standards for connected-TV services, such as the pan-European Hybrid Broadcast and Broadband TV (HbbTV), are also working on incorporating HTML5 for delivery of broadband content.

“The addition of HTML5, combined with adaptive streaming, to STMicroelectronics’ platforms is the result of a long-term cooperation between STMicroelectronics and Opera Software,” says Frode Hernes, VP Products for TV and Connected Devices, Opera Software. “For many years, Opera and ST have successfully collaborated on numerous customer projects, and the launch of our latest SDK will give STMicroelectronics’ users cutting-edge web technologies support.”

“With its enhanced value for consumers and its potential for operators to create new and innovative services, HTML5-based online television is among the most important entertainment channels in the connected home,” says Laurent Remont, General Manager for STMicroelectronics’ Unified Platform Division. “By partnering with Opera to perfect HTML5 support for our hybrid Internet/HDTV chips, STMicroelectronics is enabling immediate entry to this exciting new world.”

More countries reach Opera Mini’s million-monthly-users club

Eleven new countries each surpassed one million monthly Opera Mini users this year, according to the newest State of the Mobile Web report from Opera Software. Twenty-two countries in total now have more than one million active Opera Mini users each month. The report, which details the full list of countries is available from http://www.opera.com/smw/.

More than 140 million people used Opera Mini last month, with usage growing 83 percent in the last year. As of October 2011 Opera Mini usage has doubled eight times since its introduction.

“Opera Mini has gained users in every country, across 2G, 3G and 4G networks, across feature phone and smartphones,” said Lars Boilesen, CEO, Opera Software. “What these numbers won’t tell you is that many people use Opera Mini as their only means to get online. We’re seeing a whole new generation of people connect to the Web for the first time using a mobile device and we are only starting to see the changes — societal, technological, and cultural — that will happen as a result.”

In October 2011, Opera Mini users viewed 86 billion pages, up 107 percent year-over-year. Those page views accounted for almost 13 petabytes of data through operator networks. Due to Opera Mini’s data-crunching compression technology, those petabytes were cut down to just 1,335 terabytes of data. Over the past 12 months, data usage has surged 121percent. For the curious user, just press “help” and choose “data savings” in your Opera Mini browser to see how much data you have saved.

Opera to showcase revenue-generating Web solutions at NAB 2010

Opera Software, the only cross-platform browser company, will exhibit its latest standards-based Web solutions during NAB, April 12 - 15, 2010, in Las Vegas.

The focus of this year’s show will be on demonstrating how Web technologies and Web standards can help companies across the connected device ecosystem — cable operators, device manufacturers, content delivery companies — quickly and easily deliver valued-added content and services across their network or portfolio of devices.

Opera SDKs and turn-key Web solutions are open and flexible development platforms based on the same underlying core technology that runs Opera on the desktop, TVs, set-top boxes, and mobile phones. They are based on Web-standards and include tools, that when combined with the core browser engine and feature set, can help deliver compelling products, such as user interfaces, widgets and application environments, on any device. All Opera SDK and turn-key solutions are compliant with many of today’s leading standards for connected devices, such as HTML 5, HbbTV, OIPF, Canvas and W3C Widgets.

In addition, due to the Opera SDK’s cross-platform technology, companies are able to future-proof their investment. Web-based solutions are interoperable and can be leveraged across devices and platforms. They also allow for seamless integration of new functionality and features, as well as cutting costs and time-to-market.

At NAB, Opera will be demonstrating its latest SDK and turn-key solutions — Opera Devices SDK 10.30 for Linux and Opera Mobile 10 for WinCE — as well as other standards-based solutions for game consoles, media players, mobile phones and more.
Opera Mobile 10 for WinCE

This feature-rich, full Web browser is based on the same user interface (UI) recently released for Opera Mobile and Opera Mini. As a part of Opera’s strategy to unify the look and feel of its browser products, Opera Mobile 10 for WinCE gives customers a market-ready solution that delivers the power of Web technology to nearly any device.
Opera Devices SDK 10.30 for Linux

As a robust, open platform for creating Web-standards-based solutions, Opera Devices SDK forms the ideal foundation not only for developing full Web browsers and user interfaces, but also for generating connected TV solutions that combine widgets and full Web browsing with emerging standards for making TV interactive, such as HbbTV, OIPF and Canvas.
What we say

“The connected home industry’s evolution has created a demand for toolkits that can handle next generation IPTV and hybrid broadcast/broadband services on any TV screen or other media device,” explains Roy Satterthwaite, Senior Vice President, Americas, for Opera Software. “Opera Devices SDK for Linux and WinCE turn-key solutions are just the kind of comprehensive clients that are needed to help customers harness the power of Web technology to delivery content and services that generate new streams of revenue today and in the future.”
