Taiwan market: Fitel at risk of losing WiMAX license

Taiwan-based carrier First International Telecom (Fitel) is at risk of losing its WiMAX license as the company may not be able to inaugurate its WiMAX services before a deadline set on March 31, 2010, according to market sources.

Fitel is currently the only one of Taiwan's six WiMAX licensees to have not yet obtained a license to set up infrastructure due to financial problems.

Since it is estimated that it will take one year to establish infrastructure and obtain an operating license, Fitel may struggle to meet the deadline set by Taiwan's National Communications Commission (NCC), the sources said.

Fitel, which is currently under a corporate restructuring process, said that it has already installed a total of 52 WiMAX base stations in Taipei under the government's M-Taiwan (mobile Taiwan) program, and that those WiMAX infrastructure can be shifted for commercial operations as soon as the company secures enough capital through the restructuring.

Fitel is also considering starting its WiMAX services in a relatively small area so that it can meet the deadline, the company said.
