Production of GSM and CDMA handsets in China in first-quarter 2009 dropped back to first-quarter 2007 levels at 102.3 million units, according to EJL Wireless Research. Shipments of GSM and CDMA handsets into China for the first quarter increased by 9.2% compared to the fourth quarter of 2008.
Vendors analyzed by EJL include Haier, HiSense, Huawei, Konka, LG, Motorola, Nokia, Samsung, and ZTE on the production and sales of GSM and CDMA mobile handsets within the Chinese market.
"Nokia continued to dominate the GSM and overall handset market in China while struggling Motorola remained a distant third with 6.3% share. Within the CDMA market, Samsung regained the top position from Motorola as demand strengthened due to the introduction of EVDO Rev A technology into China Telecom's network," said EJL founder and president Earl Lum.
"Domestic Chinese handset suppliers captured only 16.7% of GSM shipments and a healthy 31% of CDMA shipments in the first quarter," said Lum.
