Taiwan's Legislative Yuan is seeking amendments to current telecommunications law that will restrict the number of antennas installed in a base station – a move that will make it more difficult for Taiwan's WiMAX licensees to set up their WiMAX base stations, according to market watchers in Taiwan.
The revised draft amendments, as approved by the Legislative Yuan at a first reading on May 5, call for limiting the number of antenna packs in each building (each base station) to three, or a total of nine antennas.
Currently, there are about 13,000 base stations scattered across the island of Taiwan, and over 40% of them accommodate more than three packs of antennas supporting GSM, PHS, CDMA 2000 and WCDMA technologies, according to a Chinese-language United Daily News (UDN) report.
If the draft amendments are approved, Taiwan's six WiMAX licensees will have to find new locations to set up their own base stations as there will be no room at current base stations to house additional antennas supporting WiMAX connections, market watchers commented.
