Taiwan market: Samsung to launch over 10 touch-enabled handsets in 2H09

Samsung Electronics plans to launch more than 10 touch-enabled handsets in the Taiwan market in the second half of 2009, aiming to unseat rival vendor LG Electronics (LGE) from the leading position in the touchscreen segment by the end of 2009, according to Jae Hyun Ryu, director of the mobile communications unit at Samsung Taiwan.

LGE currently is the number one vendor for touch-enabled handsets in the Taiwan market with a 17% share, followed by Samsung with a 12% share, according to estimates by industry sources in Taiwan.

However, Samsung took the top ranking position in the global touchscreen handset segment, shipping a total of 6.1 million touch-enabled units in the first quarter of 2009, accounting for nearly 25% of the global shipments of 24.5 million touchscreen handsets, Ryu noted.

Shipments of Samsung's F488 touch-enabled handsets accounted for five million units, or 82%, out of the 6.1 million touchscreen handsets shipped in the first quarter, Ryu noted.

After releasing the Star 5230 in Taiwan in early July, Samsung plans to bring the Jet S8000, Beat DJ M7600, Omnia II i8000, Galaxy i7500 and S5600, among others, into the local market in second half, Ryu indicated.

In order to maintain its leading position in the touchscreen segment, LGE plans to launch 14 new handsets in the second half of the year, over 50% of which will be touch-enabled models, according to LGE's roadmap.
