Sony and Panasonic sign basic agreement to jointly develop standard for professional-use next-generation optical discs

Sony Corporation (‘Sony’) and Panasonic Corporation (‘Panasonic’) announced that they have signed a basic agreement with the objective of jointly developing a next-generation standard for professional-use optical discs, with the objective of expanding their archive business for long-term digital data storage. Both companies aim to improve their development efficiency based on the technologies held by each respective company, and will target the development of an optical disc with recording capacity of at least 300GB by the end of 2015. Going forward, Sony and Panasonic will continue to hold discussions regarding the specifications and other items relating to the development of this new standard.

Optical discs have excellent properties to protect them against the environment, such as dust-resistance and water-resistance, and can also withstand changes in temperature and humidity when stored. They also allow inter-generational compatibility between different formats, ensuring that data can continue to be read even as formats evolve. This makes them a robust medium for long-term storage of content. Both companies have previously developed products based on the Blu-ray™ format, leveraging the strengths of optical discs. However, both Sony and Panasonic recognized that optical discs will need to accommodate much larger volumes of storage in years to come given the expected future growth in the archive market, and responded by formulating this agreement.

Sony previously commercialized a file-based optical disc archive system in September, 2012. Based on optical disc technology that Sony cultivated for its XDCAM series of professional broadcasting products, this system houses twelve optical discs within a compact cartridge as a single, high-capacity storage solution. Each disc within the cartridge holds 25GB capacity, offering a total range of storage capacities from 300GB to 1.5TB.

In July this year, Panasonic launched its ‘LB-DM9 series’ of optical disc storage devices. This series uses a dedicated magazine of just 20.8mm thickness to house twelve 100GB optical discs. A maximum of 90 magazines can be stored, providing a total storage capacity of 180TB. In addition, Panasonic adopted a newly-developed changer system together with RAID technology to offer rapid data transfer performance of up to 216MB/s, while also ensuring high reliability by protecting data from unforeseen faults.

In recent years, there has been an increasing need for archive capabilities, not only from video production industries, such as motion pictures and broadcasting, but also from cloud data centers that handle increasingly large volumes of data following the evolution in network services. Both Sony and Panasonic have a proven track record in developing Blu-ray Disc™ format technologies, and by actively promoting the adoption of a new standard for next-generation high-capacity optical discs, they intend to offer solutions that preserve valuable data for future generations.

Panasonic unveils the ELUGA P-03E in Japan, a 4.7” 1080p Android smartphone with air gestures

Panasonic has strengthened its range of Android smartphones today with the ELUGA P-03E, a new handset with a 4.7-inch full HD display (1920×1080) and a 1.7 GHz Snapdragon quad-core processor.
The high-end device is just 10.9mm thick and leans on 2GB of RAM, coupled with 32GB of internal memory for downloading apps and multimedia content. It’s equipped with a 13.4-megapixel rear-facing camera, alongside a low-resolution 1.3-megapixel snapper on the front. It weighs roughly 146 grams and is powered by a 2600 mAh battery.
Screen Shot 2013 05 15 at 09.39.52 Panasonic unveils the ELUGA P 03E in Japan, a 4.7” 1080p Android smartphone with air gestures
The ELUGA P-03E comes with a new “touch assist” feature which, similar to the Air Gestures found on the Samsung Galaxy S4, can detect swipes before the user has touched the screen. This proximity-sensitive touch screen can detect movements from up to 15mm away and is designed to stop users from selecting apps or menu options accidentally. For instance, if the user hovers over the camera menu or a supported app, the device will provide a description of the software before asking them to confirm the action.
Likewise, hovering over an image will show an enlarged preview, and it’s also possible to access a zoom slider through the Internet browser without using the traditional pinch-to-zoom gesture.
Panasonic says the ELUGA P-03E has a user interface built specifically for one-handed use. Swiping up from the bottom will bring the top half of the screen further down, making content and apps much more accessible. The size and position of the keyboard can also be adjusted to fit small hands, as well as the position of the padlock on the lockscreen.
The ELUGA P-03E is only available from the Japanese version of the Panasonic website, so it’s unclear whether this smartphone will ever see an international release. The product page says it will be released in late June, and pricing is yet to be confirmed.

DOCOMO licenses the software for decoding HEVC

Japanese mobile operator NTT DOCOMO announced its intent to license this March decoding software HEVC - a new international video coding standard. Decoding software HEVC from DOCOMO, as claimed by the operator, will be the first in the world to play Full HD video HEVC smartphones.

Recall that HEVC been collectively approved Jan. 25 by an international organization ISO / IEC Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG - Experts Group Motion Picture) and the ITU-T Video Coding Experts Group (VCEG - Expert Group on video coding) as the standard H.265. This standard reduces the data transfer speed of a high-quality video coding by 50% or increase quality while maintaining speed compared to the current standard H.264/MPEG-4 AVC.

According to the Japanese operator, its decoding software for smartphones HEVC provides smooth playback of Full HD video - without delays or interruptions. In addition, software for computers to decode in real-time 4K UHDTV video that resolution than Full HD four times.

Toshiba introduced the smartphone camera with CNR and BSI

Toshiba has responded to the call to Sony, which demonstrated the photographic unit for smartphones with the ability HDR-shooting. Against Exmor RS, the ability to shoot photos and video in the extended dynamic range, the model will be put T4K35. A key feature of this module is to achieve image quality as a template to the physical pixel size of 1.4 microns, with the actual size of 1.12 microns. The increased ratio of signal-to-noise performance is achieved through the combined use of color noise reduction module with BSI matrix. As a result, the company's Toshiba expects that a photographic solution will be used in today's smartphones, since it would make more slim body while maintaining the same quality of images.

Announcement of Agreements Between Olympus and Sony to Form Business and Capital Alliance

Olympus Corporation (“Olympus”) and Sony Corporation (“Sony”) announced that the two companies have entered into a business alliance agreement (the “business alliance agreement”) and a capital alliance agreement (the “capital alliance agreement”) through a third-party allotment of Olympus's common shares to Sony.

Comment from Hiroyuki Sasa, Representative Director and President, Olympus Corporation
“In line with its medium-term vision announced in June 2012, Olympus has been pushing to enhance its financial strength and weighing the possibility of a business and capital tie-up for greater business synergy in the core business domains of medical and imaging. In this regard, we have decided to form a business and capital alliance with Sony, which is strong in image sensors and other image-related technologies. Partnering with Sony will provide great advantage to Olympus and enable the two companies to exchange various complementary competencies. Investment from Sony will help strengthen our financial base. In addition, through this alliance, the strengths of the two companies will merge, certainly making it possible for Olympus to contribute to world medical progress by developing a variety of new medical devices that would not be possible by Olympus alone. In the field of digital cameras, we will seek to achieve collaboration in a manner that further improves the competitiveness of the two companies.”

Comment from Kazuo Hirai, President and CEO, Sony Corporation
“As part of our strategic initiatives announced in April 2012, at Sony we are aggressively pursuing the growth of our medical business, with the aim of developing it into a key pillar of our overall business portfolio. The business and capital alliances we have agreed with Olympus today will be integral to these plans. By combining Sony's cutting-edge technologies in areas such as digital imaging, 3D and 4K* with Olympus's long-standing experience and established foundations in the medical market, we believe that we will be able to create highly innovative and competitive products and generate new business opportunities in surgical endoscopes and other related areas where significant future growth is anticipated. We also believe there are many potential opportunities for collaboration between Olympus and Sony's digital camera businesses, and are confident that by building on our respective strengths we can also enhance and grow our presence in this market. All of us at Sony will spare no effort to ensure that the business and capital alliances, including Sony's investment in Olympus, will be a resounding success for both companies.”
