LG COMMERCIALIZES FIRST SMARTPHONE WITH PRIVACY AND BUSINESS VIRTUALIZATION TECHNOLOGY IN U.S.

Strategic Venture with VMware and Verizon Wireless Enables
Secure Virtual Mobile Experience on LG’s Optimus Vu:

LG Electronics (LG) announced that its Optimus Vu: — known as Intuition in the United States — is the first commercialized smartphone in the U.S. on the Verizon Wireless Network to offer Privacy and Business (P&B) Virtualization. P&B Virtualization essentially divides the smartphone’s operating system in half — creating a secure, IT-controlled environment for business applications, while leaving the end user’s personal data and applications unchanged. The LG Optimus Vu: is the first of a new breed of enterprise-ready smartphones that offer the convenience of this secure, virtual work platform along with all the benefits of LG’s exceptional mobile technologies and user-friendly UX features.

The Optimus Vu: is the result of LG’s successful strategic venture with VMware, the global leader in virtualization and cloud infrastructure, and Verizon Wireless, the largest mobile network operator in the United States. This newest device follows in the footsteps of another collaborative effort, the LG Revolution for VMware® Horizon Mobile™. Winner of the coveted International CES Innovations Design and Engineering Award in 2012, the device featured VMware Horizon Mobile and gave users an exciting sample of the virtual mobile experience.

Many of today’s businesses implement a bring-your-own-device (BYOD) policy when it comes to mobile phones in the workplace. But having work information and applications on a personal device can represent a security risk, and also can make it challenging for the user to keep personal and business-related matters separate. LG’s mobile device with P&B Virtualization provides a separate, secure virtual work environment that is accessible anywhere, anytime. Employing VMware Horizon Mobile, the LG Optimus Vu: allows users to run a second operating system, completely isolated from the one running on thedeviceitself. This makes it easy to keep work-related applications and data separate from personal ones. By reducing security risks and enhancing manageability for businesses, P&B Virtualization is also more secure than the current range of app container-based solutions available in the market.

“The Optimus Vu: with P&B Virtualization represents a giant leap forward in mobile virtualization technology,” said Dr. Jong-seok Park, president and CEO of the LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “Joining forces with VMware and Verizon Wireless has enabled us to create an enterprise-ready smart device that enhances productivity and convenience. Users can enjoy the versatility of having two devices in one while businesses can feel safe in the knowledge that sensitive information will be completely secure.”

“LG and VMware are addressing the challenges IT departments face every day due to BYOD and the consumerization of IT,” said Boaz Chalamish, senior vice president and general manager, End-User Computing, VMware. “Creating a separate virtual workspace on a mobile device enables IT to provide security and control, while also reducing the burden and liability of managing the entire device. This approach strikes the best balance between addressing IT security needs and end-user freedom.”

LG plans to introduce P&B Virtualization in more of its industr

Nokia Lumia 928 now on sale, shipping on the 20th

The first new high end Windows Phone in 6 months, the Nokia Lumia 928 on Verizon, is now on sale.

The handset is retailing for $99.99 on a two year contract, or $499.99 commitment-free.

The actual handset will only ship on the 20th May, around the same time as we expect stock to become available in store.

Compared to the Nokia Lumia 920 the Nokia Lumia 928 is slightly lighter with a slimmer profile, AMOLED screen and a powerful Xenon flash that very effectively prevents motion blur in night time pictures.

The smartphone is only available in white and black. See the device at Verizon here.

Nokia Lumia 928 officially goes on sale from Verizon, black version begins shipping on May 20th (Update 2)

Great news, patient Verizon Wireless customers. The wait is over and now the carrier has begun selling a brand-spanking new Windows Phone 8 flagship handset: the Nokia Lumia 928.

Available now in black and white color options on Verizon's website for the previously-announced price of $99.99 with a new two-year contract ($499.99 without a contract), the only caveat to purchasing the handset online is that, if you want the all-black version, you'll have to wait a few extra days. According to the listing, orders of the black handset will begin shipping on May 20th; meanwhile orders of the stand-out white version are shipping immediately.

The Nokia Lumia 928 is an exclusive handset for Verizon that is a modest improvement over the Lumia 920, which was released last November. Noteworthy improvements include a new xenon flash for improved low-light photography, an amplified speakerphone for louder and clearer audio playback, and a new edge-to-edge 4.5-inch OLED screen for better viewing under direct sunlight. Learn more about the rest of the Nokia Lumia 928's specifications here.

Update: We forgot to mention that Verizon is also selling a number of accessories for the Nokia Lumia 928 — including the popular Nokia DT-900 Wireless Charging Plate and Fatboy Charging Pillow — which may be found here.

Update 2: As pointed out by a Redditor, the black version is not shipping until May 20th but the white version is shipping immediately. We apologize about the mistake, and have updated the article.

While Android and iOS remain the top contenders, Windows steadily moves upwards

As iOS and Android continue to battle it out for top selling smartphone OS, Windows has grown steadily over the past year and is now at its highest sales share figure so far.

While accounting for just 5.6% of smartphone sales in the first quarter of 2013, Windows gained 1.9% compared to the same period last year, according to US smartphone sales data by Kantar Worldpanel ComTech.

With nearly half (49.3%) of smartphone sales, Android remains the top selling operating system, but saw only slight growth compared to the same period last year, and is down versus the 3 months ending February 2013 (-1.9%). iOS remains in second place with 43.7% of smartphone sales, down throughout Q1 2013.

Windows strength appears to be the ability to attract first time smartphone buyers, upgrading from a featurephone. Of those who changed their phone over the last year to a Windows smartphone, 52% had previously owned a featurephone. Comparatively, the majority of iOS and Android new customers were repeat smartphone buyers, with 55% of new iOS customers, and 51% of new Android customers coming from another smartphone. While the differences between these figures are small, with over half of the US market still owning a featurephone, it's likely that many will upgrade over the coming year, which will ultimately contribute to more growth for the Windows brand.

Little movement is seen among the top smartphone carriers in the U.S market. Verizon continues to lead smartphone sales with 37.2% of smartphones sold in the 3 months ending March 2013. AT&T remains in second place at 27.9%, and Sprint in third place with 12.3%. T-Mobile is the only carrier to decline this period, seeing a 3.2% loss versus the same period a year ago, down to 9.5% of smartphones sold.

HTC M7 initial U.S. launch partners to include T-Mobile, Sprint and AT&T – Verizon launch delayed

For months, we’ve been hearing that the upcoming HTC M7 would be the first HTC device to launch on all four major U.S. carriers since the HTC Tilt 2. We’ve heard descriptions of a Sprint branded device and seen evidence to suggest that the M7 would also be heading to Verizon and AT&T.

According to one of our most trusted sources, AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint will launch partners for the HTC M7 in the U.S. market. While there are details that show a Verizon variant of the phone is in the works, our source claims that the launch of the Verizon HTC M7 will be delayed. Our source was not able to elaborate on why Verizon is delaying its launch of the M7, but we have a feeling that they may want to put some distance between the M7 and the HTC Droid DNA since the two devices are so closely related.

Based on previous details from a different source, we expect the HTC M7 to go on sale in Europe on March 8th. The roll-out of the HTC M7 on AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint will most likely follow a few weeks later. Hopefully, HTC will lay out all of the HTC M7 launch details at the February 19th press event in New York and London.

Verizon Wireless 4G LTE Network
The Verizon Wireless 4G LTE network allows you to download photos, apps, and games in seconds and entire movies in minutes. LTE (or Long Term Evolution) provides significantly increased upload and download speeds over 3G networks, as well as significantly reduced latency (or lag time). Verizon Wireless expects 4G LTE average data rates to be 5-12 megabits per second (Mbps) on the downlink and 2-5 Mbps on the uplink in real-world, loaded network environments.

With these blazing fast speeds, you'll be able to stream HD movies without the annoyance of constant pauses to buffer the video stream--as well as quickly download HD-quality movies right to your phone in minutes. Additionally, you'll be able to download a new song file in about 4 seconds or upload a photo to your favorite social networking site in about 6 seconds.

The Verizon Wireless 4G LTE mobile broadband network will also redefine the mobile office for business users. Business applications that used to require wired networks will be untethered forever, allowing you maximized productivity and efficiency while you're out of the confines of your office. Enhanced security lets you tap into most VPN networks with less waiting, and faster responsiveness enables you to upload 10 MB presentations back to your team in less than 25 seconds.

In areas serviced only by 3G, you can expect download speeds of 600 Kbps to 1.4 Mbps and upload speeds of 500 to 800 Kbps in Mobile Broadband coverage area.

Verizon Wireless Services
Backup Assistant: This complimentary service automatically backs up your mobile contacts to your online address book. If your phone is lost, stolen, or damaged, or you decide to upgrade, easily restore your saved address book to your new phone. You can also add, delete, edit, and print your contacts online and send the changes to your mobile phone. There are no subscription fees for the service.

VZ Navigator Capable: With this GPS-enabled phone, you'll be able to access the Verizon Wireless VZ Navigator service (additional charges applicable) for voice-prompted turn-by-turn directions, heads-up alerts, local search of nearly 14 million points of interest in the US (such as landmarks, restaurants and ATMs), and detailed color maps.

Visual Voice Mail: This innovative service enables you to delete, reply, and forward voice mail messages without having to listen to prior messages or voice instructions. Visual Voice Mail is the ideal tool for the busy mobile professional who may need to prioritize which messages he or she listens to first. Features include on-screen access to voice mail message status, save up to 40 messages for 40 days (or archive permanently), create up to 10 different caller ID-based greetings, and reply via call back, text or even voice mail.

Leaked: BlackBerry 10 Laguna Specifications

With tongues now wet with a leaked render of the BlackBerry 10 Qwerty (N-Series) in the wild posing alongside the already now known London (L-Series - referred to as the BlackBerry 10 Full Touch) RIM just may need to call a plumber…or two.

Specifications on leaks are typically quite abstract with very minimal details, but this isn’t the case with what you see above. This L-Series dubbed Laguna making its way to Verizon gives us a great indication and direction of what we can expect from RIM to combat competition. Will this be enough to satisfy your needs or do you believe that 2013 will have a tech spike on the mobile front?

Diving in deeper:
If you want speed, RIM has answered your request. The Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8960 is listed as a Pro processor in the weight categories of Play, Plus, -Pro-, and Prime that could have speeds between 1.5-1.7Ghz with the addition of a multitude of embedded radios. Jumping the gun for a sec, the MSM8960 has a Bluetooth 4.0 radio, but interestingly enough BT 2.1 is listed. Something to keep note of!

The dimensions look to have hit the spot. 130mm tall, 65.6mm wide (remember the Bold 99XX is 66mm) and an excellent and not too thin 9mm depth. It is good to see RIM still believes a mobile should be a mobile and not a tablet to the ear. This overall size will welcome all sizes of thumbs who will no doubt be swearing less as they type (on the freak’n awesome BlackBerry 10 virtual keyboard).

Keeping up with the Jones, this L-Series is topped with LTE making it an instant seller alone for the speed demon. (Those unfamiliar, this is a CDMA device, not a GSM.) Dual band CDMA and UMTS and Quad band EDGE should help in those wooded areas.

The 4.2? screen with 1280×768 with a 355ppi is deemed as the highest resolution on a mobile to date. A previous source have said that the London would only be benefitting with the 1280×768 resolution making me think that the Laguna is it’s CDMA counter-part. This is a leak after all…

The inclusion of autofocus has finally made it’s way, rather late then never on the 8MP shooter satisfying the “pro amateur photographer” in us all. Just imagine using this camera and Scalado software hand-in-hand!

The RAM see’s a 1GB update with 16GB onboard and a microSD expansion slot. No mention on whether the 64GB cards will work, but if they do this will literally replace my collection of devices for movies and music. BlackBerry’s have excelled as a multi-tasking device and BlackBerry 10 OS will sure enough take it over the top, but being a PlayBook owner I know 1GB takes me only so far before. I am also interested in seeing how BlackBerry 10's memory management will hold up and will it allow applications to be installed on the microSD?

Rather than creating a new charging port that doesn’t connect and work with anything else, RIM has kept the standard microUSB port allowing users to continue using their previous assortment of chargers. With the connectivity options of microHDMI, NFC, and DLNA we are looking at the direction of RIM with the vision of QNX on future advances of connectivity, accessibility, and the sharing of information. Going back to Bluetooth 2.1…really RIM? Didn’t anyone even consider 3.0 or 4.0 as they all work backwards to my knowledge. With the Qualcomm S4's embedded BT 4.o this still has me confused so if anyone can share some insight I’ll send you a BlackBerry 10…really…no I’m kidding.

One of the gripes with the non-removable batteries are that batteries have memories and though their life cycles can be plenty you have to remember that contracts are 2-3 years in a large general scale. Active users will charge 2-3 times per day reducing the life span on the daily. RIM has done us great justice with announcing a removable battery giving users that flexibility we strive for. The Laguna is set to have a 1800mAh that should give you a solid day of workhorse usage.

Face detect for phone calls. This sounds super interesting. Will this be the BlackBerry version of FaceTime?

The SIM type isn’t specified, but I reckon a microSIM will make its way below the battery. This is where I was hoping that RIM, though tag-teaming with others to produce a complicated non-backward compatible SIM would have adopted the open-usage of the Apple-designed nanoSIM which in fact is a smaller, simpler, and backwards compatible design which reduces the size internally as well as to the device build.

The specifications left out are straight-forward so there wasn’t areas that needed to be expanded on.

Did I mention that the image is a leak. Well it is which means you should take the image with a grain of salt.

Verizon Selects Motorola Medios Content Security to Protect Entertainment Everywhere Experiences on FiOS Flex View

Motorola continues its advanced content protection of Verizon’s FiOS Flex View with its Hollywood-approved, SecureMedia® multi-device streaming technology

The rapid adoption of connected devices means consumers expect to get their entertainment everywhere – even premium content. The challenge? Service providers must be able to deliver this content on a growing number of devices, while meeting studios’ and content providers’ rigorous standards for content protection and security.

Verizon has selected Motorola Mobility as a key DRM supplier to secure its FiOS Flex View multi-screen content service using the award-winning SecureMedia® Encryptonite ONE™ HLS+. Now, Verizon FiOS subscribers can use Flex View to enjoy their favorite network entertainment—including hit TV shows from NBC, WB and E!, plus thousands of Hollywood titles from all the major studios—streamed to the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch, Android devices, and select Samsung connected TVs.

Verizon’s Flex View lets FiOS customers buy or rent more than 25,000 on-demand titles, including movies and TV shows, and watch them on their TV, PC and mobile device. SecureMedia® Encryptonite ONE™ HLS+ helps protect Flex View on-demand content, with its standards-based, studio-approved security solution.

Security is a mounting concern for service providers addressing the explosion in multi-screen media consumption. A 2011 Motorola study found that nearly 70% of global respondents were watching TV on other devices, including smartphones, which in the US experienced a five-fold increase in TV viewing over the previous year.

“Now, more than ever, content protection is absolutely necessary to deliver today’s entertainment to multiple screens,” said Peter Burke, Vice President of Product Management, Converged Solutions, Motorola Mobility. “Our Medios portfolio is dedicated to helping our service provider partners like Verizon meet consumer demand for multi-screen experiences. SecureMedia® Encryptonite ONE™ HLS+ is a key component of that portfolio, as the leading solution widely available today that has been internationally approved by Hollywood studios.”

Motorola’s SecureMedia Encryptonite ONE™ HLS+ provides a streamlined process for service providers to ingest, transcode and securely deliver live and on-demand content via standard HTTP methods and infrastructure. This flexible, scalable solution lets Verizon offer its subscribers anytime, anywhere access to secure, premium entertainment on multiple devices

“We’re thrilled to offer our FiOS TV customers the best in film and TV, at the highest quality, streamed with Flex View,” said Maitreyi Krishnaswamy, Director of Consumer Video Services for Verizon. “With Motorola SecureMedia® we can continue to expand our delivery of premium on demand content to multiple screens, safely and securely, so our subscribers can continue to enjoy entertainment everywhere.”

About Motorola Medios SecureMedia Encryptonite ONE HLS+:

Motorola Mobility Takes Screen Size and Battery Life to the Edge with Three New Smartphone Additions to RAZR™ Family

More screen. More battery life. More compact. More colors. And the best of Google packed inside. Introducing the new RAZR™ M, RAZR™ HD and DROID RAZR™ MAXX™ HD.

Speed, power, design and the best Android™ experiences around. Motorola Mobility is delivering all that and more with three new additions to its RAZR™ smartphone family: Motorola RAZR M, the full screen phone; the nonstop all-day entertainer Motorola RAZR HD; and the unmatched, live-forever battery of DROID RAZR MAXX HD by Motorola. All three Android-powered smartphones are built with top-of-the-line materials, are small in size, big on battery life and packed to the gills with the best experiences Google has to offer.

Pushing Screen Space to the Edge
Motorola RAZR M packs a big screen into a phone that fits in the palm of your hand. The Super AMOLED Advanced 4.3-inch display spans from edge-to-edge. The border you typically find on smartphones is virtually, in a word, gone. Even though it’s smaller in size, you still get 40 percent more screen than the leading competitor*. You can type emails and texts easily with a wider keyboard, watch YouTube™ videos and movies on a wider screen and browse the Web with Chrome™ for Android without squinting. All on a long-lasting battery that is 40 percent more powerful than the competition*.

Motorola RAZR M is also easy to use. It comes with interactive, swipe-by-swipe tutorials that walk you through the setup and help customize your phone to your needs – no instruction manual required. While RAZR M already has a long-life battery, when you set up the SMARTACTIONS™ battery saving rules too, your phone settings will automatically adjust to squeeze even more from every charge.

Available in sleek black or stand out white, the Motorola RAZR M will be coming soon to consumers in several Asia Pacific countries. For those in the US, it’s coming to the Verizon Wireless 4G LTE network as DROID RAZR M by Motorola for the unbelievable price for $99.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate with a new two-year customer agreement. All that power, speed and edge-to-edge beauty at a great price. No catch.

Go. All. Day.
The new Motorola RAZR HD provides long-lasting battery performance for nonstop high definition entertainment. Its 4.7-inch HD display is the most compact smartphone in its class, designed for watching up to 10 hours of movies and TV shows or 6 hours of surfing the Web. You get the same sharp clarity as your HDTV, and beat the competition* with 85 percent greater color saturation and 50 percent more pixels per inch.

It’s not all about looks though. If you feel like hitting the road, you can drive with confidence knowing you’ll get up to 6 hours of voice-guided turn by turn GPS navigation all on a single charge. No matter where the day (or night) takes you, Motorola RAZR HD will keep up with 24 hours of battery performance.

Available in sleek black or stand out white, the Motorola RAZR HD will be coming soon to consumers in various countries throughout Asia Pacific, Europe, North America and Latin America. In the US, it will be available before the holidays on the Verizon Wireless 4G LTE network as DROID RAZR HD by Motorola. We’ll provide more details on pricing and availability soon.

Long Live the Battery
Never have an “off” day again. DROID RAZR MAXX HD has the same features as Motorola RAZR HD, but takes battery life to a whole new level. We’re talking 32 hours of performance1 with the longest-lasting LTE smartphone1. You can literally get through an entire Hollywood trilogy with 13 hours of straight video playback, up to 10 hours of YouTube HD content or surf the day away with up to 8 hours of web browsing. For those who eat, drink, work, play and sleep with their phones, life won’t ever be the same.

Just In Time For Summer Verizon Wireless Bringing The Power Of Its 4G LTE Network To Jersey Shore May 17

Verizon Wireless announced that just in time for the busy summer season, it is bringing the nation’s largest 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) network to a large portion of the Jersey Shore May 17. With the 4G LTE network, customers can use 4G LTE wireless devices to access the Internet faster, listen to music or watch video, take advantage of thousands of applications, and stay in touch with family and friends, all with speeds up to 10 times faster than before.

When Verizon Wireless turns on its 4G LTE network here, customers who live in, or visit shore points and surrounding communities including Sea Bright, Monmouth Beach, Belmar, Point Pleasant, Toms River, Atlantic City and into Cape May County will have access to the nation’s fastest 4G network.

“The size of our 4G LTE network gives us a significant competitive advantage over competitors as it enables more residents, small businesses and local government to take advantage of the speed and connectivity benefits offered by this advanced technology,” said Verizon Wireless Regional President Mario Turco. “We are committed to continuing the aggressive rollout of our 4G LTE network in 2012.”

4G LTE Devices and Plans

Verizon Wireless customers can choose from a variety of more than 20, 4G LTE-enabled devices, including notebooks and netbooks; hotspots and modems; and smartphones and tablets, including the new LG Lucid™, an easy-to-use smartphone offering 4G LTE speeds at a low price, and the soon to be launched DROID Incredible 4G LTE by HTC, which will allow users to shoot HD video and capture photos at the same time with its Video Pic feature, all over the Verizon Wireless 4G LTE network.

The company also recently introduced HomeFusion? Broadband, a solution that leverages the power and speed of the Verizon Wireless 4G LTE network to deliver high-speed, in-home Internet access for residential broadband, particularly in areas where Internet options are limited or are not currently available.

4G LTE Overview

Verizon Wireless introduced the globe’s first large-scale LTE network on December 5, 2010, and currently offers service in 230 markets nationwide, and is on course to deliver 4G LTE to its entire 3G wireless footprint by the end of 2013. The company’s 700 MHz spectrum gives Verizon Wireless specific advantages with 4G, including a contiguous, nationwide network license.

In real-world, fully-loaded network environments, 4G LTE users should experience average data rates of 5 to 12 megabits per second (Mbps) on the downlink and 2 to 5 Mbps on the uplink. When customers travel outside a 4G coverage area, their devices automatically connect to Verizon Wireless’ 3G network, enabling customers to stay connected from coast to coast.

The Verizon Wireless 4G LTE network was named “Fastest 4G Network Yet” by Popular Science’s 2011 Best of What’s New Awards, and was ranked No. 1 on PC World’s 100 Best Products of 2011. For more information about Verizon Wireless 4G LTE network, please visit: www.verizonwireless.com/lte.

LG Spectrum: First Press Shots, Full Specs

It was only a few days ago that we saw the first images of the LG Spectrum, spiritual successor to the LG Revolution -- among the premiere batch of Verizon's 4G LTE handsets -- but those tiny photos really didn't do the phone justice. Luckily we've gotten a set of higher quality shots, along with a full rundown of the specs: - Dual-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon S3 - Android Gingerbread 2.3 - 10.6 millimeters thick - 4.5-inch, 1280x720 IPS LCD - 1GB RAM, 4GB storage plus 16GB microSD - Eight-megapixel, 1080p rear camera; 1.3-megapixel front-facing - Bluetooth 3.0, Wi-Fi b/g/n - HDMI, DLNA, Wi-Fi Direct - 1830mAh battery - Simultaneous voice and LTE data - 10-device LTE hotspot All-in-all pretty much what we expected: a handset very similar to the Nitro HD on AT&T, which itself is an American port of LG's Optimus LTE from its home country of South Korea. Despite the screen here reading February 14th of next year -- a date close to Mobile World Congress -- we'd be surprised if Spectrum didn't launch before the end of the year into Verizon's already-impressive lineup of high-end devices; after all, no one is buying Revolutions in the land of Nexus, RAZR, Rezound, and Droid 4. source
