China market: CDMA handset sales to top 80 million units a year by 2012

Unit sales of CDMA handsets in the China market are expected to reach 60 million in 2010 and further expand to 80 million units in 2012, compared to annual sales of 10 million units in 2007, market sources in Taiwan quoted data from CCID Consulting as indicating.

In addition, the number of CDMA subscribers in China is likely to top 167 million in 2012, representing a four-fold increase from the numbers at present, the source added.

VIA Telecom, a chip design subsidiary of VIA Technologies, as well as Taiwan-based handset makers including Dopod International, Inventec Appliances, Compal Communications and Foxconn International Holdings (FIH), are expected to benefit from the expanding CDMA market in China, the sources indicated.

Dopod and Inventec recently secured orders for CDMA handsets from China Telecom directly, while Compal and FIH are producing CDMA handsets for Motorola and Nokia, respectively, with the two branded vendors also supplying CDMA handsets to China Telecom.
