Nokia to customize TD-SCDMA handsets for China Mobile

Nokia and China Mobile Communications, China's largest mobile telecom carrier, have entered into cooperation for the handset vendor to supply customized TD-SCDMA handsets. Initial model(s) will be available by the end of 2009, according to industry sources in Taiwan.

Colin Giles, Nokia's senior vice president and president of Nokia China, expressed Nokia's firm support for TD-SCDMA in his November 19 speech at the GSM Association Mobile Asia Congress 2008 taking place in Macau, China.

China Mobile procured customized TD-SCDMA handsets from Samsung Electronics, Motorola and LG Electronics before the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, and has negotiated the same cooperation with Sony Ericsson, the sources indicated.

In view of the large market potential of TD-SCDMA, Nokia invested in Commit Incorporated, a China-based TD-SCDMA chipset design house, to become one of six major shareholders, the sources noted. But Commit closed down operations due to financial problems in April 2008. As a result, Nokia has lagged behind other handset vendors in offering TD-SCDMA handsets, the sources explained.

Nokia is developing TD-SCDMA handsets based on its Symbian S60 platform, the sources pointed out.
