Taiwan-based network equipment maker Gemtek Technology and Singapore-based Creative Technology have both decided to adopt 65nm WiMAX chips from Silicon Valley-based ApaceWave Technologies for their WiMAX CPE products, according to ApaceWave CEO Gwong-Yih Lee.
ApaceWave's mobile WiMAX Wave 2 baseband SoC (system-on chip) solution, the APW2050, has entered design-in at the two companies, Lee indicated.
The high performance, low-power APW 2050 SoC supports all 802.16e mobile WiMAX Wave features, including MIMO Matrix A and B and beam forming. It requires a minimum of external components to create WiMAX modems for devices such as CPE, PC cards, USB dongles and portable handheld devices, according to company data.
ApaceWave is currently conducting interoperability testing for the APW2050 with a number of WiMAX equipment suppliers and telecom service providers, with an aim to push the SoC into volume production by the end of 2009, Lee stated.
The WiMAX market is expected to experience a major takeoff during the 2009-2010 period, Lee asserted.
Backed up by its WiMAX expertise, ApaceWave also plans to venture into the development of solutions for the LTE (Long Term Evolution) technology starting year-end 2009, Lee indicated.
